Ive always wondered what they do when they crop? I was always told they put pins up in the dogs ears.

Yes, they cut off about 1/2 the ear. Just like in the pictures from my link. This allows for the ears to be taped and "trained" to stand erect on their own. There is also a page on the same website on how to tape natural ears to prevent the "flying" look.

I looked at those pictures - OUCH! I wouldn't want my ears cut off, that seems scary to me...

I'm not trying to turn this post into anything it shouldn't be and I am completely un-biased on this because I don't know all the information, but is it true that some group out there is trying to outlaw the cropping of ears because it is so painful to dogs? I heard that from someone at PETsMART a while back, I jud never thought to ask about it...

"Some group" is always trying to make something against the law. This thread is about what is done, not whether it should be done or not

You live in Canada where it is legal to crop ears and dock tails. Or else we would only see uncropped ears in the Canadian rings:)

Do you mean your county or area has outlawed it ?

Yes, I realize that which is why I made it clear I was not trying to turn this post into anything other than what it was to begin with. Just wanted the answer for my knowledge. Sorry if I offended anyone, it was not my intention.

Shanz,

My husband thought that when they crop the ears, they meant just tape them to make them stand. He didn't realize they cut them before having to tape them.
The article leialittle posted is excellent in describing what is done, at least I think so, and that's the same one I showed him.
