I've spoken with Connie of White Boxer Rescue about fostering Chaz. They are not keen on it. She is the current foster mom and the dog has bitten 5 people (including 2 CHILDREN) other than Connie. (Connie's hand required stitches.) This dog is very, very troubled and is in need of a good behaviorist to work extensively with him. Otherwise, they will euthanize Chaz.

They are located in Cape May, NJ. The behaviorist they use is in Philly, but is booked solid for the next SIX MONTHS and this dog cannot wait that long. They are not inclined to place this dog with anyone else before it has worked with a behaviorist.

If anyone knows of a behaviorist - or is trained in that area -- in the Southern NJ area and can be of help, please let me know and I will put them in contact with Connie and maybe we can get Chaz the help that he needs and deserves before it is too late.

Thank you all.

Dan, again I cannot thank you enough for caring and getting involved. Did they say that he was able to be transported to a behavioral therapist/trainer or that he must be treated in that area? I have a few connections here in my area I may be able to work, if they allow us to transport that is...

Transport

Aimee,

Well they were planning on taking him 2 hour's drive to Philly, so I suspect transport is ok. I think their main concern is getting the dog some behavior help as soon as possible. And of course, there's the problem of housing this troubled dog while seeing a behaviorist, unless the behaviorist can house it as well as treat it. And money might be an issue (I don't know that, but can only imagine it would be).

On a personal note. Both women I've spoken to have been very nice and informative (more so than the web site, that's for sure), but there is something strange about each of them. They seem really reluctant about things. I offer help, and I've offered to solicit help for this dog and they keep saying stuff like "well, you know. . . we really want this dog to see a behaviorist..." or "well, you know, its really hard to find the right foster for this dog..." or "well, you know.... he's really got bad problems..." and things like that. I get the feeling they have pretty much given up on this one already. I hope not, but that's the impression I'm left with.

ANyway, keep me posted if you can find someone to help and I'll let them know. Thanks.

Dan

I am going to contact a friend of mine right away. She has a true love of animals. She is a professional trainer, has 45 acres, an awesome boarding facility (she keeps my dogs and worked with Lexi), and is a member of the humane society locally. Let me send her an email and see what her opinion of the situation is. I'll keep you posted! Maybe I can get her to take him in and train him, maybe not..but it is worth a try.

Poor Chaz

Aimee,

If you find a place for this boy I am still willing to help transport him to his new home. Don't hesitate to e-mail me if you think I can be of any help. I unfortunately do not now of any behaivorist in this area :( Good luck and you both have hearts of gold for even trying to help this poor dog.

Dan,
They are probably reluctant to place him in a foster home
because of the biting.
To be honest, if I get in a Boxer with those kind of aggressive tendancies toward people we PTS immediately and many rescues have the same policy.
I know they are very swamped with dogs down there. So maybe that was why they acted kind of strange. Sometimes
this gets very stressful and we may not seem as nice as
we actually are:) because we're just so darned tired!

This was my part of my friends response..she said however she feels this dog would see better results with a behavioral therapist rather than a trainer and she is strictly a trainer. We are working to see if we can find a behavioral therapist willing to work with him...No luck as of yet!

Aimee, It's hard for me to say much without seeing the dog, but I lean towards saying that in knowledgeable, gentle, patient, yet firm hands, this dog could probably be turned around. He obviously has had some hard times in the past. This type of behaviour usually can be improved with trust, love and patience. Has anyone thought about trying him out on a different type of collar?... maybe a harness? A dog like this shouldn't be rushed around and should not be forced, but rather coaxed until he understands it is safe and he is not going to be hurt or punished. I think if you could get someone to work with him who knows what they are doing, (definately not a hard trainer), he could probably do well.

I will keep you posted!
