Torn Pad

Walked in to my home last night to find blood everywhere!! After checking all animals in the house we found the source. One of Chance's pads looks like it is torn. I am assuming that while outside, he must have gotten it caught on something. It does not appear to hurt him because he is not limping. We put a sock on his foot (what a sight) last night so that we would not have blood everywhere. This morning it was not bleeding but a piece of the pad (fairly small) was hanging off. OK..what do I do? Is this something that will heal alright? Should I take him to the vet? Should I keep it covered up or let it breath? I am such a worry wart when it comes to my babies!!

I would at least CALL your vet and see what he says. Also remember how important it is to keep this site clean, we neve know what our babies are stepping in. I hope he is feeling okay, and Im sorry but I had to giggle picturing your boxer wearing a sock.

First, I am NOT a veterinarian, so take this with a grain of salt.
If the torn part is attached only by a piece of skin or a very thin strand of tissue, I would go ahead and clip it off. I would imagine that dogs' pads are designed to heal readily.
Then, I would keep it covered with gauze and vetwrap for about two days so it stays clean until a scab forms.

If the piece is well attached, you should probably have a vet remove it so it doesn't tear off and cause further injury.

The problem with calling a doctor or a vet is that they generally want to see the patient before giving a recommendation, just so they don't give out the wrong information.

Good luck, and let us know what happens!
