My husband and I, along with another couple, will be vacationing in the SF area the end of September. We're spending two days in Monterey/Carmel/Big Sur and are going whale watching. We'll go to Napa overnight and spend two days in SF.

I think we have all accommodations figured out. Do you have any restaurant recommendations or sight seeing spots we MUST see? We plan to do Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf - basic tourist stuff.

Our anniversary is the night before we leave and thought we'd go to Cliff House. Is that a good choice? Are reservations recommended and how far in advance?

Thanks for any help. You can email me privately if you'd like.

Oooohhhh I'm soooo jealous!!! :) In a GOOD way! I'm from the Bay Area (San Jose) and we got married at Lover's Point in Pacific Grove, (Monterey) you are going to all our favorite places, although my husband and I are more the reclusive (sp?) types and we steer clear of crowds. May I suggest while in Monterey, take the 17 Mile Drive - if you like cruising and site seeing - it's not too long (17 miles :) ) but it's very beautiful. We made a squirrel friend along the way while taking a picture and he just followed us the whole time we were out of the car! It was too cute!

Oh there are so many places and so much to do! Whatever you decide, you WILL have a blast!

Please update us when you get back and Happy Anniversary!!! :) :D Have so much fun!!!!!!

The Monterey Peninsula area is my home. Though I've been gone for 20 years. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is one of the best in the world. If you like outlet shopping, there is one 2 blocks away. You will do better to eat on Cannery Row, Monterey Fisherman's wharf is mostly "tourist traps". The Whaling Station Inn has wonderful seafood. Carmel is famous for it's food - just about anywhere is good. Clint Eastwood has a restaraunt there, "the Hogsbreath Inn!"

If you drive down to Big Sur, not too far past the state park is Nepenthe's, a wonderful place for lunch on the spectacular Big Sur coastline. Be prepared to take your time on that drive, it is beautiful, but curvy.

The water at our beaches is very cold, not many go in it so our beaches are not real crowded. But we get our very best weather in September. Be prepared for traffic congestion.

If you are in my home of Pacific Grove, don't harm a Monarch butterfly. There is a $500 fine! :) Have a great time in my special place.

Mustard's Grill is famous in Napa. That is another area where the food is wonderful. We love Calistoga.

Speaking of Outlet shopping, I guess I should tell you there is a HUGE one between San Jose and Monterey. Take the Leavesley exit going south on 101 - it is right there. They open at 10AM. And if you want to leave S.F. and drive down to Mtry first thing in the morning, stop in Gilroy (where the Leavesley exit and the Outlets are) and have breakfast at the Long House on Monterey Rd., not much to look at but good breakfast food and lots of it. Gilroy is the Garlic Capitol of the world!
