I hope this is the correct forum to post such a question. This is just something I was curious about. Please don't laugh.

I've seen female dogs that have noticeable tits and I've seen some that you can barely see. I always assumed this had to do with whether or not the dog had ever had puppies (I've had 2 females and neither were noticeable).
Is this correct or are dogs like humans and some are just bigger?

Ruby's nipples were normal size (a little small) up until she was about a year old. Soon after her first season she had a pseudo or false pregnancy and they never went down. The weird thing is that some are small but most are big. People always ask, "How many puppies did she have?". I think it depends from dog to dog though because the breeder had a female that was making the show circuit that had HUGE nipples and she had never had a litter.

I always thought that Keisha had large teats compaired to other dogs - they were very noticeable from a very young age. Long before she was ever mated some of them were about 3/4 inch or more long. So many people thought that she had had puppies when she had not. Now that she has had pups they aren't that much bigger than before. I guess that each dog is different - just like people.

Keisha - March 8/98 - female plain brindle with cropped ears
Travis - May 14/00 - male flashy fawn with natural ears.
Sammie - approx 11 yr. F/S Beagle X
Riley - March 8/97 - F/S tri-color, long haired chihuahua

Linda, ROFL! I just knew this question is from you! But to answer your question, I think that it just depends on the dog. Im not a expert just going by what I have seen. Cindy

HAAA! I've got all of you beat! My boxer baby is a boy and he has bigger nipples then our neighbours female lab. Harley had normal sized nipples when we first adopted him at 13 months but he had just been neutered the week before. When he was about 15 months old, we noticed that Harley's nipples had become very large, almost like a nursing bitch. Everyone who sees him automatically asks about our "girl". Our vet says it's probably nothing to worry about but has no idea what causes it. If anyone else has this "strange" situation with their boxer boy, I'd really appreciate knowing that we don't own the only "Girly Man" furbaby!

I think it is hormones that makes them get bigger and that usually happens with pregnancy or a pseudo-pregnancy. Now how do you explain Harley. Hmmmmm!!!
