I found this little thing on Harley tonight and figure it must be a tick. I've never seen one before but don't know what else it could be. It looks like a tiny worm, dark reddish-brown in colour, and sticking straight out of Harley's side. When I pulled it out it left a little hairless, scabby area. Anybody have experience with dog ticks? With the psoriasis problem still not under control I think I'll just wrap Harley in a plastic bag for the remainder of the summer; either that or pray for snow!!

Thanks for any advice anyone can offer.

Brenda, I could be wrong, but whenever I have seen ticks on dogs, they don't look like a worm at all. They kind of look like a "flesh colored mole",(don't know if that is a good way to explain). Kind of like a wart, that is very loose. If you do ever come across a tick, just for future reference, never ever pull a tick out of a dog, if you do, you will leave the head in. At the clinics I use to work at, when I gave baths, I was told by the vet to spray the area with a tick killer, and just give the tick time to fall out, which should only take about a day. Not sure if I helped or not, sorry.

Brenda, all the ticks I've seen look like a tiny dark brown crab with a fat body. I use Frontline spray on Roxie and have found ticks on me but not her. Most of the ticks in Ohio are deer ticks though and they are the most common. They are usually found in tall weed areas of woods. I think I'll try searching the web under "ticks". Try this link - http://umm.drkoop.com/conditions/ency/article/002856.htm

Thanks so much for responding and for the info you both provided. This thing on Harley was definitely not a tick because it was long and thin (like a worm) but really quite tiny. I have no idea what it might have been and think I'll make an appointment with the vet to have Harley checked out for "alien" inhabitants. Have a super day!

When ticks are engorged with blood, they get long and reddish, wormy-looking, and you don't always notice the relatively tiny "feet" on them.

Rocky also had these little "skin" things that were basically pink flesh, wormy shaped popped out-the vet had us leave them alone. I had one or two in my lifetime-doctor said same thing-leave alone. Of course, with Boxers being so prone to cancer, I woud have ALL growths checked periodically, just like us humans should have our own freckles and moles checked by a dermatologist periodically.
