Teeth/Breath....

This is just a general dental hygiene question that I need some opinions on. I took a dog to the vet this summer and commented on HORRID RANCID breath and stated it had just started about a month or two ago. Vet opened the gums and peeked and said it probably was intestinal since my other dogs didn't have horrid breath.

Fast forward to a dog not wanting to eat, yelping while eating a treat, not taking treats, and generally being moody. I took the dog in and the vet again said he didn't see anything wrong in the mouth, but she wasn't being super cooperative. I suggested maybe a light sedative (we often had to do this with my dad's dog who had chronic yeast infections in her ears). Vet did and we found a cracked loose tooth that was swollen and ickie. We are now scheduled for surgery next week, but on antibiotics and pain pills.

Is the vet an idiot? I have another issue with him (ie they changed the address on two of my dogs, but not the third and I wasn't getting shot notices).

I thought so, but needed to hear someone else saying it I guess. Next week will be our last trip to see him, unless something major happens in between. I've gone there for 6 years, but had been chalking a lot of goofy things up to them just being "farm vets." Either way my pets deserve better!

I'm no Vet but as soon as you started to describe the problem I thought "tooth problems". I would see a new Vet.

I would have been happier to hear that the vet had recommended the sedative. I can understand him missing it the first time if the symptoms were not as appearant. Bad breath can mean many things, but with the symptoms that you described the second time, it should have been obvious to the vet that further exam was necessary.
