How do you go about getting an older dog to do basics? I just got Jade (3yrs old) and although we are working on making sure she is healthy I wanted to get ideas on how to start getting her to do basic stuff. She doesn't know how to do anything at all and she is a jumper. I want to make sure she knows she is safe and loved but jumping is a bad thing. I have a 7 year old daughter and Jade knocks her down. I feel bad I guess because she was in such a bad situation before I got her but I have to get this jumping under control. I guess I just need ideas on how to start.

She is the one with the three pups, right? I think if this girl never had any training you will need to take a beginners class. The jumping is normal boxer stuff but needs to be discouraged. If you start with the basics-sit, stay, and reward for that, and ignore when she jumps that is a good start but it will take time and patience. Your little girl needs to igniore as well, which is hard for kids I know, but if she just turns her back, folds her arms, and does not acknowledge Jade that will start the process. Just have to ask, Mom and pups will be vet checked soon right? How is Jade's diarrhea-better? Just want to be careful with nursing Moms as they need a lot of TLC, which I know she will now get from you :)

Yep it's the mama with 3 pups. Her tummy issues are better but still not the way it should be. Yes she is going to vet Monday and so are the pups. I think that I am going to have to just not let my daughter go around Jade for the moment. My daughter is doing a really good job at not paying any attention when Jade jumps but Jade just jumps on her back so she still knocks my daughter down. I have started the sit then treat but Jade will just turn around instead of sitting and now every time she sees me she goes up to my hands and starts nudging. SO she has associated me with treat. So I am either doing it wrong or Jade just doesn't get it. Maybe I just need to take care of her and nothing else for now. Maybe she is just to overwhelmed. At least she can't knock me down and if I turn away she usually stops jumping.

Yes, I think she is all turned around, new Mom, new home (first home really), cute kid to love :) and she is going to have to acclimate. I would also talk to your vet as he could probably recommend a trainer or classes. But I think you are right to just keep your little girl out of (unintentional) harms way. This poor pup probably never got enough food either. As for the sit try putting it over her nose and then move your hand backward. If she has her eye on the cookie and you move back her butt should naturally go down :) Please keep us posted on Mama and pups

I am sure it will just take time.
We rescued Billy at 2(ish) years (16 months ago), we started in beginner obedience lessons and he recently passed his Canine Good Citizen test. He had no manners when we got him & was not house trained. He is a fantastic family dog now who lets the children (8 & 9) climb all over him - he loves them so much he pines when they go off to school in the morning and mopes around all day waiting for them to return. Good luck to you.

Maybe when your daughter is around Jade, you can put a leash on her. Hold the leash tight so she doesn't even have the capability to jump. Have your daughter participating in the training with treats and lots of extra brushes. If she starts to jump up, maybe a stern "Uh Uh" and "sit."

Treat Jade as if she is a puppy and start training slowly...one thing at a time. It will take time and patience, but she will get it!!!

Good Luck and keep us posted.

BTW....if she still has some tummy issues, maybe some boiled chicken would work well as a training treat.

Thank you so much for the boiled chicken advicew I am going to try it. We did take Jade to the Vet and the Vet said she is fine. She will get booster shots, worming, and be fixed after she is done nursing puppies. Just wanted to let everyone know. Sorry so short but I have been sick and taking care of Jade and pups along with my skin family wipes me out.

Get better and hang in there.
I am experiencing something similar with Sam- he is so happy and excited to be home that he jumps and doesn't follow commands very well. At this point my priority is to get him physically healthy. The other pieces will fall into place after that.
Good luck!
