this upcoming weekend i'll be starting the switch from purina pro plan to solid gold's mmillennia dog food. also bought the seameal to supplement it as well. can't wait to see how apollo is going to react, but hopefully it will all be positive. going to start him off on a 25%/75% mix to make it easy on his stomach and if all goes well after a few days, we'll move up to a 50/50 mix and so on and so on until he gets to all solid gold. his coat looks good now, but looking forward to seeing if the solid gold food makes a difference in his coat's appearance. it'll probably take a few weeks of being on 100% solid gold to notice the difference right?

Curious

I'm not much help but was just curious why you switched from PurinaPro? We've recently switched to PPro because that's what was recommended to us by the Petsmart vet. Just curious. But best of luck switching to you and your pup.

Just from what I've learned on here Purina isn't a "premium" brand of food and lots of vet's get kick backs from the mfr. and hence they suggest you use it. I'm sure if you did a search on here and you would see lots more info on this subject. Most suggest checking the "Whole Dog Journal" or "WDJ" list of dog foods for selection of premium foods.

BKidd -

Purina Pro Plan is not a very good quality kibble. If you do a search in this forum, you will find a wealth of information as to which kibbles are premium kibbles, as well as which ingredients to avoid.

In short, you want to avoid foods heavy in most grains and cheap fillers, such as:

Corn
Beet Pulp
Wheat
White Rice
Animal by-products (as these are so non-specific and can contain feet, beaks, feathers, etc)

From the Purina Pro Plan web site, their top ingredients include:

Chicken, brewers rice, whole grain wheat, poultry by-product meal, corn gluten meal, beef tallow preserved with mixed-tocopherols (source of Vitamin E), whole grain corn, corn bran, fish meal, natural flavors, egg product, dicalcium phosphate, salt, potassium chloride, vitamin supplements (E, A, B-12, D-3), calcium carbonate, choline chloride, zinc sulfate, ascorbic acid (source of Vitamin C), ferrous sulfate, riboflavin supplement, niacin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, biotin, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, copper sulfate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, garlic oil, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, sodium selenite. O-4455

Hope this helps.

apollo's switch is going well so far. apollo has been on a 25%/75% mixture of solid gold mmillennia and pro plan for the past four days and all of his stools have been solid. i have boosted his mixture to 50/50 this morning and his last stool was also very solid. i also started to use the seameal and follow the instructions on the package and mix it with some warm water at the bottom of his bowl. he loves that stuff! he is literally licking his bowl clean everytime! hopefully things will continue to go smoothly for him. if all goes well i'll boost him up to 75% solid gold and 25% pro plan next week.

i had requested a catalog and brochure from the company's website and i've read through it. they definitely seem to care a great deal about the products that they put out. i'm really looking forward to seeing what kind of a difference switching him to solid gold makes. their brochure mentions giving their food three months to notice any differences in coat, allergies, etc.

Solid Gold

Im glad your pups doing good on the solid gold, I switched my girls to solid gold about 7 months ago, best thing I ever did, they love it, there coats are beautiful, and one of my girls had a very very sensative stomach, she is a totally different dog now. Thank goodness!!!! Anything that will help my babies. I also had done quite a bit of investigating before I switched, I had tried omh, which I think is a wonderful food, It just didnt agree with my girls. Every dog is different as we all know. I do feed my girls the Hund-n-Flocken, I also use the seameal, (sometimes), and I only feed them the solid gold cinna-bones cookies, they love em!!!!!!! Best of luck, I think you'll both be very happy!!!

WOW, you are located in Turkey? Can you crop their ears in Turkey? Have you tried ordering direct from the company? I know that as I was reading through the Solid Gold brochure that was sent to me, it mentioned that they ship their food all over the world. It carries a shelf life of nine months, three months once it is opened, so if you feed enough of it it might be worth buying four to five bags at a time. Just a thought, hope it helps.
