May's Mom

Boxer Pal
Hi! I'm May's Mom. May is a 6 month old fawn Boxer. She's really good at sitting, shaking, down--BUT she won't COME. She doesn't want to. When I call her, she barks at me and runs around the yard. Not even a treat will convince her to come inside. And she's too fast for me to catch her. I have to wait for her to WANT to come in--which tells her that she is the boss. PLEASE HELP. She's already been to obedience training. She's just really stubborn and wants her way! Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the board :)
Regarding your question - when I had the same problem with my Tina (sometimes she wanted to walk more and refused to come when I called her, if I tried to approach she just ran from me), our obedience instructer told you can try this trick: run away from your dog waving hands and shouting out something. The dog will follow you, say COME a couple times as you see her coming. When the dog is near you, praise her like crazy.
Hope this helps ;) Best of luck

Use your leash to help you train the come command. Put the dog in a sit/stay, go to the end of the leash, and give the command. You might have to pull gently (or a little harder-depending on the stubborness-LOL), and REEL the dog to you. PRAISE, PRAISE, PRAISE, when she comes.
If the normal size leash isn't long enough, you can purchase 15-20 ft training leashes. These work really well.

You might try a new treat also when teaching this....something she hasn't had before. Soon she will learn that you have *new goodies* when she does right!

Have fun!!

As Sabrina suggested I would put May back on a leash and never tell her to come unless you can enforce it. I would forget the "come" word and use something else as she has already learned to tune that word out. Until she learns to come when called you could let her run around the yard with long cord or leash attached to her collar. I would supervise her when she is out like this in case she gets tangled up. When you want to go get her, go out and step on the cord and then you can grab it and reel her in.

As Marina suggested, turning and running in the opposite direction when you call them, works really well too. Most dogs can't resist chasing you and will soon catch up. Always give lots and lots of praise, no matter what it takes to get May to you.

Never never call May to you and then do something that they don't like, such as clip their nails etc. In this case, always go and get them instead. And last, but not least make sure that calling May to you does not always end her play time. Make a habit of calling her to you, give her a treat and let her go off and play again.

Good luck,

My trainer teaches come using the leash method. This shows the dog there is no choice when you say come.

Also if you have already tried to use the word come without luck try the new method with a new word. The dog does not believe that come does not really means anything and it may be best to use "here".

I find that squatting down and calling your dog's name when asking him/her to come to you works. This way you are at his height level and he can't easily ignore you. If you are in the park sit or lie down on the grass and call to the dog and you will find that he would not be able to resist running back to you and jumping on you to smother you with kisses. I try not to repete the come command, if he does not come the first time I call then I will go and pull him forward with his collar to the spot that I was calling him from. In your case this might be hard since you can't catch your dog.
I also sometimes call him with a bone or one of his toys in my hand and this works every single time.

Hi Mays Mom,our trainer got us to play hide and seek with Lucy, wait until May isnt looking, then hide, call her to you, then make a big fuss when she finds you. this is a game they love, it also teaches them to keep one eye on you at all times.
