My 1.5 year old male boxer has a rare but annoying habit (when he does it which isn't all the often..but often enough) Where he Pees out of Spite! Basically if I take away one of his toys (ie tired of playing rope so I put it away to show him we are done), or put him in his crate when he isn't keen on it. He will deliberately pee in the house out or crate out of spite. I can just have taken him outside only moments before, and there isn't any specific spot he will just kinda look over at me, and start peeing, when he has to pee he will go to the front door, to let me know he wants to go outside so I know this is not the case.. What can I do?

The other problem I found is he has NO issues whatso over peeing in his crate, and well..licking it up. I found this out after I decided to wash his crate blankets, and placed him in there with some clean bath towels instead, he pushed aside the towels, pee'd on the plastic and then tried to lick it all up before I could take him out and clean up the mess. He is crated while I am at work, and 9 times out of 10 there is no problems (that I know of as he could be peing and licking it up while I am at work without my knowledge)

Any thoughts?
Thanks

Dogs do not pee out of spite. That idea is a total myth. Dogs just aren’t capable of seeking revenge. Their brains simply do not work that way. It is possible for him to be peeing out of frustration though. Sometimes peeing is a stress reliever (especially for a male who likes to mark). But in all honesty it sounds like you may have a simple potty training problem.

When my female was between 1yr & 1 1/2 she was bell trained & very reliable and yet every few weeks she’d have an accident. I have no clue why she’d sometimes forget but occasionally it would happen. I have found that with her she sometimes just needs to be reminded. So if it’s been several hours and she hasn’t asked to go out I remind her and take her out. That has solved the problem for us.

Also if you saw your boy licking up his pee than I’m sure that’s not the 1st or the last time it has happened. It’s probably something he does fairly regularly. How many hours are you crating him? Some dogs just can’t hold it for hours & hours. Maybe you could set up a video camera to see what goes on when your not home.

What on earth makes you think it's spite? The leg-lifting inside the house suggests a not-fully trained dog, or marking. And a dog peeing in his own crate, then licking it up so he doesn't have to sit in it isn't exactly punishing you, is he? It's a million times worse for him. IF he is peeing in his own crate then licking up the evidence, then the most likely explanation for that is that the dog needs the opportunity to relieve himself. How long do you typcially crate him?

My pup also licked up his own pee or mopped it up if a towel was available.

He's crated for 4 hours twice a day. I got him to stop peeing by simply taking him for a long walk every morning. It was that easy.

Very Important...If he does pee, you need to clean everything. Bathe the dog, wash the blanket with vinegar and clean the kennel with nature's miracle. There must be no pee scent left behind!

Ok So spite may have not been the best word frustration is just as likely. It's not a potty training issue imop (although I could be wrong) as these things have occurred moments after returning from a walk. Ie, Take dog for a walk, come home play with toys take a way toy.. Waits a few moments staring at me and when I ignore him.. he looks up at me and starts peeing, then I'll quickly grab him and a leash take him outside, and he won't pee.

I crate him for about 8 hours a day while I'm at work, and this only started after I moved his crate. (was in the living room moved into the bedroom next to my girls crate). From what I understand though, if the issue was him being in the crate to long then I would come home from work to find pee in the crate (the smell, or wet blankets) but the issue is.. I'll take him for a walk then put him in the crate and right away or within less then an hour he pee's again in the crate and starts licking it up, not alot of pee...

My schedule for my boxers is as follows (it's doesn't very much at all)

Wake up: feed dogs 8am
: Walk Dogs 8:30am
: Crate Dogs 9:00am
: *Summer Come home 12 walk dogs re-crate *Winter no
: After work 5-5:30 come home walk dogs do whatever until about 6:30
: Walk dogs 6:30
: Crate Dogs 7-8pm *at gym
: Feed dogs 9pm
: Walk Dogs 11pm
: Crate dogs for bed (or sleep in room) 12pm
*this doesn't include me taking them out any time they are standing by the door

Weekends are a little different as we go to parks, lakes whatever and there is no work invloved.

As far as him finding it disgusting to sit in his own pee, i dunno.. He has had issues peeing where he sleeps.. He used to pee on the couch where he likes to lie, as well as on my bed, and he would go into the crates and mark there to both his and my girls, when we go for walks he has no issue, peeing on his front legs or peeing until the puddle surrounds his feet and not batting an eye or moving.

I dunno, what do you guys think? What are your suggestions. As how to get him on track.

Is the dog neutered? It sounds a little like a marking problem (or at least, the peeing on the couch does), but it could also be a prostate issue or even conceivably a UTI - in that it doesn't appear that he's emptying fully on walks. Worth letting a vet take a look, perhaps? At least then, you'd either know of and be able to treat a physical problem, or alternatively know for sure that there isn't one and can address it as a behavioural or training issue.

Yes he was neutered about a year ago at this point.

Some dogs that leg lift, or otherwise urinate inappropriately around the house, are driven to do so because of prevailing anxiety or stress.
The anxiety created by such situation's may cause dogs to signal their disapproval by means of urine marking.
I think he is telling you something and you are not listening to him.
Try leaving him out of his crate while you are home, I think he does not like being crated all the time especially while you are there.
Just my thought.

Good luck.

Huh, I donnu, the only anxiety this dog has would be me taking away his toy when it's time to take a break (and from what I understand it's important for you to be the last one with the toy for dominance reasons), my 2 boxers are pretty happy puppies from what I can tell, they get walked at least 4 times a day, we spend lots of time rough housing, and when I'm not playing with them they are playing with each other, they get rewarded for listening , ect cet. As far as leaving him in the crate when I'm home, the only time he is in a crate is when I'm away from home, or asleep, and lately the two of them haven't been crated at nite which is about to change again as he keeps kicking me when i'm sleeping haha.
