Due to the high price of propane, we are trying to cut our gas bill. We have a quartz radiant heater and are thinking about buying another heater. Possibly an electric oil filled radiator.

Our electric bill drops dramatically during the winter since we aren't running the central air and the pool pump.

Anyone use space heaters? Can you recommend a type?

I don't use my heat in the winter b/c I really don't have the money to pay the outrageous utility costs around here. I can't think of what brand mine is but I got it at Walmart (it's gray and has power and thermostat buttons on top) and it has a thermostat that I can set to whatever temperature I'd like. It cuts on/off when it needs to. I absolutely love it. My boys and I stay toasty warm at night under the covers with this little heater all winter long and it saves me a ton of money on heating costs.

When we remodeled our downstairs and we put our master bedroom down there and did not put in enough heat vents. We often use a space heater to help out. We have a ceramic one that has a timer on it to shut off. I believe the brand is an aloha breeze from Walmart. Had it a couple of years and works great. It sits on a stand so it's not close to the floor and has the auto shut off when tipped over. If I buy a new one I would think the ones with the actual temperature settings would be nice. One thing I really like and use is our electric blanket at night. I have found that I do not use the space heater as much now, only during the day if I'm in the room and need to take the chill off. When it got really cold (minus 10-20 degrees) we would use the space heater occasionally at night and I was always waking up and checking it to make sure it was ok. Now we dont use it at night and we really love the electric blanket and can drop the thermostat on the furnace several (5-10)degrees at night.

We went to Walmart to look at heaters. We ended up with 2. We bought an oil filled radiator with 3 power settings and a timer. We also bought a micathermic flat panel radiator heater. We weren't sure about this one and thought we will try it for a night and take it back if we didn't like it. We are now keeping both. Bayleigh spent all evening lounging on the floor in front of the micathermic heater. She never lays on the floor, always the furniture! We decided that would be her own personal heater!!

It was about 30 degrees here last night. The kids were gone so we closed their bedrooms and ran the micathermic one in the living room while watching tv. The furnace never kicked on! When we went to bed, we lowered the thermostat to 60 and ran the oil filled one in the bedroom. We were all toasty warm!

At my house, it is actually cheaper to use propane than electric. Our electric company is a co-operative and they have electric lines running mostly through the woods because they came in a picked up everyone that was between towns that the other electric company hooked on many many years ago. Because of that, they have higher maintenance cost because their lines are not run along the road and a lot of trees in the woods bring the lines down. Not sure if that makes sense to all who live in the cty or highly populated areas, I live in the middle of nowhere basically...

I do have a little ceramic space heater under my desk to keep my toes toasty but other than that, we have to use the furnace or we wouldn't be able to afford the electric bill.

I have a furnace that I keep at 65-67 all the time. I also have one of the oil filled radiators for the bedroom, and we use propane in the living room during the day. Small one so it doesn't use alot of gas. I have electric balnkets also, but it just depends on the weather. Real cold I use the electric blankets and run the radiator just to take the chill out. Other than that I have a 60lb Boxer baby that usually does the trick of keeping us warm at night.
