im not sure if im posting this in the right spot.

Today i was at work with my puppy and out of nowhere this lady was like
"are you ever gonna breed her because i saw this man on the street the other day walking a boxer andit wasmale so i got his number form him because i want to breed my dog with it"
those were her exact words..out of nowhere my reply was no shes getting fixed when shes old enough then she said something even dumber
"im going to breed my pitbull with his boxer because no one wants a pitbull and his boxer is male and the male traits are more dominant, so the puppies will have boxer traits."

some people are just so dumb. My sister knows this lady and apparently her pitbulls have been inbred and bred with any dog imagineable.

 You're right! Some people CAN be so stupid. I'll just never understand... There is just so much wrong with her comments and attitude, I don't even know where to begin...

i dont understand somepeople

I can’t understand how some people will turn out puppies like every time there dog goes into heat. That’s bad enough, but what’s worse is they’ve never been in a show ring and don’t health test. And like that lady she wasn’t even staying purebred.

And another thing that makes me mad about back yard breeders, they don’t even interview the purchasers.

Some people can be so irresponsible.

I don't think it's a matter of being stupid or dumb, it's more ignorance than anything. It's best to take an opportunity such as this to educate someone who obviously doesn't know any better. Most likely they won't change their minds but just think of the lives you'll save if you can influence just one person to not breed their pet!

Argh! People really should be required to have a lisence to breed their pets. Lisene should only be granted after they prove their not an idiot! Ok after health testing etc..but an IQ test wouldn't be a bad idea!

Well there are also people selling Labradoodles and Goldendoodles for 1,000 on up around here. They are the latest rage. Even LIFE magazine had a story on them. They are also mutts/crossbreeds but one of these days somebody will consider them purebreds I'm sure.

Eventually, perhaps - but in the meantime only the truely ignorant ;)

One of the basic requirements for any breed to actually be a 'breed' as opposed to a crossbred mutt is the ability to breed 'true'. And that encompasses both physical and temperamental characteristics. A labrador bred with another labrador will produce puppies that look like labradors and predominantly exhibit the breed temperament.

A labrador crossed with a poodle though will produce some puppies that look mostly like poodles, some that look mostly like labs, and some that aren't realy identifiable as similar to either parent. Ditto the temperament aspect. These so-called 'labradoodles' if bred with another lab/poodle cross will also produce a wide variety of specimens. There's no consistency of looks and temperament, no actual established breed there. It could be done, of course, but it would take many many generations to establish a consistent breed (and of course, you first have to decide which characteristics you're going to breed for ;) ).

There is nothing wrong with anyone having a crossbred dog, or necessarily with anyone breeding two different breeds together. But when unsuspecting (actually ignorant) people are duped into paying large sums of money for an animal that they expect to look a particular way or to have a particular temperament then there is certainly a problem - because they have very little chance of getting it. That is the prime difference between a pure bred and a cross bred dog - the predictability of their physical and temperamental characteristics ;)
