I was wandering if anyone had heard of any good ways to get rid of smegma (secretion from the penis) because I have started to notice it more often on my pup!

Well, my vet told me that male boxers usually do this when they start reaching sexual maturity. I don't know if there is a way to get rid of it without neutering or not? Not sure if that is what was going on with my boy or an infection.

ROFL!!! I have to laugh at this because we JUST took Hayden in for this very thing. I thought he had an infection because he, and Abbi, have been paying extra special attention to his boy parts and because he's been secreting more than I've noticed before. Turns out, he's coming into his sexual maturity (he's not fixed, but don't know if that makes a difference....) and he's *AHEM* pleasuring himself. I didn't know dogs did that!! The vet said that she would test for any bacteria in the area but it would come back positive just because of where it is and/or put him on a low dosage of antibiotics, just in case there IS something. I opted not to do any tests and put him on the meds. I don't like to medicate the dogs but I want him to be comfortable too.

But to answer your question, our vet said no, that it's just something that happens around this time and as long as it looks/smells "normal", that there isn't anything to worry about.

Rambo often has smegma, and he has been neutered since he was 6 months old- he's now 2.5 years. So, at least with him, neutering has nothing to do with it, and it can go on much longer than once they have reached sexual maturity. Like everyone else, I thought it was an infection at first, but a trip to the vets reassured me that it was harmless! Sometimes there isn't anything there, but sometimes there will be a little droplet on the end of his penis. For us, the simplest solution is to wipe it off with a tissue when we see it!

Thanks for all of the responses! Even though there is nothing I can do about it :-( . It is good to know there is most likely nothing wrong!
