We started to have a great day yesterday. We were cleaning the yard, Nikita was all over the place at once. Most of all she spent the day playing with her friend the black lab living accross the street. At 6:30 PM I heard my neighboor yell. My first thought was "what has Nikita got herself into". Well both dog saw a skunk and thought it would be great to run after it. Both of them got skunked. and it smell is terrible. I ran to Petco and bought a special shampoo but it didn't work too great. Has anyone any idea how to get rid of the smell? Right now Nikita is one unhappy dog. She is locked up in the kitchen!

I have always heard tomato juice is the thing to use, but I honestly don't know if it works.

Where is Rye Brook? I have a lot of family and friends in upstate New York. Used to live there years ago too.

Tomato Juice DOES work - although, dpending on how much of a *blast* he got, it probably won't remove all of it. If you can, put him in some sort of a smallish tub, so you can pour the juice over him and collect the runoff over and over again. Saturating a washcloth with the runoff can help you collect it and rub him down over and over again.

I feel for you, I had a dog that did that and came in and rolled all over my bed. I was up all night washing sheets, pillows, comforter and the dog. I used tomatoe juice and it worked, we were in the bath tub for a while soaking in it.

A dog in Brus obedience class was recently skunked. The trainer sells Fur Foam which is also supposed to work to remove skunk. I'm not sure where you can buy it but you may want to try a petstore or a trainer.

We had a boxer when I was a kid and he got sprayed by a skunk one night. My mom gave him a good soaking in a bathtub full of tomato juice but it took some time before the odor was completely gone from him as well as from everything in the house. What made it even worse was that my dad had his funeral business in our home and the whole place smelled like a skunk!! He put the dog in the basement for the night and, unfortunately, that's where the Casket Showroom was. You guess it! Joe spent the night curled up in one of the most expensive caskets in the showroom!!! Not funny at the time but hilarious now!! Good luck with whatever method you choose to handle this situation and please let us know how it works out.

Thank to you all for your ideas. I found another product that is supposed to neutralize the smell rather than covering it. I am not too crazy about using food product especially tomato juice. Nikita doesn't like to take a bath and she is always shaking herself. If she has tomatoe juice on, my bathroom will look like a horror movie scene!
Linda: Rye Brook is in the county of Westchester, north of the Bronx and close to the Connecticut border.

We used to have a Boxer named Brenin, and he got caught by a skunk early one morning, I didn't have any tomato juice in the house and the store didn't open until 8am. I was told to try coca cola, it took some of the smell away. When the store was open I got a large can of tomato juice, and put Brenin in the bathtub and poured the juice over him and rubbed it well in. Well, you know what happened, he shook! It looked as if there had been a murder in the room. Then there was the problem of getting rid of the smell in the house, I had the windows open for about three days and burnt insense. That finally got rid of it. Good luck .
