Oscar's sister had pup's about 4 weeks ago...you know, I have been talking about getting one since then. Well, mama has lost a lot of weight and is not gaining any back. It's like the pup's are sucking her completely dry. Is there anything you guys know of that will put more meat on her bones? She looks very sickly but is still very dedicated to her 7 puppies. I told her to give her cottage cheese or peanut butter. Thinking maybe that would help. Her vet gave her the same idea about the cottage cheese, so she has been doing that for the past couple weeks with no signs of any weight gain. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

There is nothing abnormal happening here. Mother dogs often, more than 50% I'd guess, go through the "horrors" like this.

It is simply indicative of her converting nearly all her food into milk for the puppies.

Heres what I suggest

1) 4 week old puppies should be almost fully weaned, they only need to have a "comfort suck" a couple times a day. They are at the stage where there human mommas should of interceded with the puppy food! They are able, should be able, to lap from a dish and will no doubt have teeth so are ready to eat. Get them fed and they'll lose interest in momma pretty fast and she'll be on the way to regaining condition. Although it's not what I would feed probably the easiest and best way would be to get a bag a high quality premium PUPPY food of the Iams, ProPlan, Science Diet ilk. Feed it to the puppies soaked.

2) Try to get some Silica tablets from the local Health Food or drug store. Feeding your bitch this (2 tabs x 3 times a day) will have her milk dried up in a few days.

3) I have a feeling that momma might not have been fed adequately throughout the nursing period. Probably unknowingly, not pointing fingers, but a nursing bitch will need anything from 3 to 5 times her normal daily intake of food to be able to keep condition and be able to produce milk. At this stage it's a Catch 22 for you. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. She's going to have to be fed bigtime. Forget cottage chees and peanut butter etc, that only produces fat and has little nutritional value. By way of example, Sabine with her recent litter had been eating, in the nursing period, 3 kilos of fresh meat a day. That's roughly 6.5 pounds. The meat has been in the form of fresh beef or chicken carcasses, wings, necks. She has also been getting vegetables with the beef meals 3 times a week. She was eating 4 meals a day while nursing.

I'm sure you get the idea of how much food your bitch should of been getting.

This is the catch, start giving her this much now and her milk will not dry up and it has to eventually in order to attain peak condition.

So her 2 needs contradict each other a bit. a) She needs condition b) she needs her milk drying up.

So again, although it's not what I would do as I don't like the stuff personally for my dogs I'd get her onto a high quality premium as well. Nothing like Eukanuba for putting weight on dogs.

PS Before anyone jumps up and down about getting the puppies off the bitch NOW and not later and starts telling me how they keep their puppies with the mother till xX weeks etc etc. I agree!!!!!!

But this bitch sounds in quite poor condition and the last thing she needs right now is puppies on her, it's a special case

PPS Jen, her hair might all fall out!! This is OK too, it'll come back brighter and silkier than ever

Thanks Matthew!

It sounds as though this might be a problem that a lot of "not so experienced" people might go through. The pregnancy was not planned nor was it expected. But then again it was not spade so what happened very well could have. My friend had been feeding "mama" puppy chow. The vet said it has extra vitamins and minerals in it that she would need. She ate ALL THE TIME, the bowl was always left full for her. They would fill this big bowl three times a day. They also gave her veggies and meat a couple times a week. The puppies have just started to eat, puppy chow wet down with a simulated milk ?!? The milk stuff is what her vet gave her. They are eating twice a day and then sucking from mom inbetween. Would you suggest getting those tablets to dry her up? Probably, expecially since we know they can handle the food. I'll be telling her to feed the mom MEAT and veggies. I hope that works. The poor dog looks so sick. Thanks once again for your help.

Sorry to butt in on your thread jen..........

I have a problem, not quite the same, Rosie doesn't seem too skinny...yet...Rosie is starving! At least she is acting like she is! She wants to eat all the time. She is stealing food off the table, begging, taking it right out of the kids hands!!!! She never did this before. How much should I let her eat??? She is on puppy food (vet recommended). The puppies are 1 week old. Can anyone help me???

I put Tess on puppy food when she had her pups but she also was starving. The vet said it was too rich and was going straight through her. I put her back on her normal food but 3 times her normal amount split into 3 meals. This helped her enormously although she still looked thin until the pups were about 6 weeks old.

Seffy had the same problem and she got mastitis. I just made sure she was eating...constantly. Be on the look out for abnormal skin discolorations around the nipple areas. She became so weak and sick I had to wean her pups at three weeks. Everyone turned out to be fine. lovicon

Kinda late for this advice since the pups are 4 weeks and probably weaned off but for future reference..............
I posted before about my concern for Rosie.......we kept the puppy food, fed her 3 times a day, then gave her a can of food once a day. She isn't skinny at all, she actually gets full! She looks great, the milk keeps coming. We are introducing puppy food to the pups this weekend because they are 3 weeks now.
Should have them weaned off her in about a week I hope.

Good luck with the weaning. You are lucky Rosie stayed plump. Tess looked so thin, but now she looks fantastic again and everyone comments on her good condition. Her coat is so shiny. I had to smile when I thought of being totally weaned off. Some of my pups were still trying to suckle at 7 weeks! We went to see one of my pups at 10 weeks and he again tried to suck off Mum. She wouldn't have that. Keeping Belle has been the making of Tess, she acts like a pup again and is so playfull:D Are you keeping a pup?

First was the decision to NOT keep a pup since we already have 2 dogs, a cat and kids.........................
Then I wanted to keep the runt if he made it, sadly he did not :(
Then again to NOT keep a pup,
There is only one girl and she is so sweet! She is the only pup with white tips on her ears........so maybe.
There is also a litter of boxers available in November, that also it something we are thinking about. We get first pick of the litter!
So as you see we are undecided............confused! :p

LOL I could see the pups still trying to feed from Rosie too! Right now when she walks around they will actually hang from her til she finally gets them off!
