Boxer Pal
Hello everyone,
Long story but I'll try to make it as short as I can....
I got Shelby back in March 2007 when she was three months old. Since the day I got her she's had chronic diahreah and had a hard time gaining weight. She would go poop 4-6 times a day, very loose. Yes, she was treated for worms, all types I might add) Plus she peed constantly. It got to the point where I couldn't leave her alone for more than 10 minutes or she would have an accident. I tried a few types of food but nothing helped, she's currently on Canidae and I plan on keeping her on it. I aksed many people for advice and despite everyone telling me that "puppies poop alot" and "she's still a puppy, they have accidents", and "you work all day so maybe she isn't completly housetrained" I knew in my heart something was wrong. When I was home she rang the bells to go out. Most of the problems happed while I was gone. I felt that she just couldn't hold it. About a month ago, she pooped (loose) on the floor 10 minutes after pooping outside. By the look on her face I knew it wasn't her fault, she looked guilty and sorry at the same time. At this point, I'd had it. So I called my vet and explained the situation. I brought her down for an exam and a blood profile. The bloodwork came back fine ($300 later) so he put her on "flagil" to see if that would help stop the diahreah. A couple days later, she pees on the floor with NO warning, just squatted and peed. I called him again and he gave me a round of antibiotics (clavamox). I continued with the flagil and slowly things started to improve. My vet called me up last week to check on Shelby (he's such a wonderful vet!) and I told him she was getting better. He said the flagil he put her on is to treat "small intestinal bateria overgrowth" (SIBO), apparently thats what she has. I don't know alot about it but I guess theres some bacteria in her intestines that she creates too much of causing the diahreah. She's been on this medication for a month now and since then no accidents, no pooping OR peeing, well with the exception of when she got into a bag of catnip but that was my fault....ooops! As a matter of fact we left her home for 9 1/2 hours yesterday from 6:30am to 4pm (after she ate that morning!) and she didn't have an accident!! Horray!! That has NEVER happened. I'm so proud of her and so glad she's feeling better. I've never left her alone for more than 6 hours and I never would have left her alone like that after she ate so this was a huge. I am so thankful for my vet. When I explained the problems she was having he was empathetic, positive, and was confident that it was't just the way she was and we were going to get to the root of the problem. The other vet in the office that told me to just switch her food to some "sensitive stomach" type that they sold for $28 for an 8 pound bag...sheesh!! Now I can enjoy my puppy!
Has anyone ever encountered this?
Thanks for listening to me ramble on and on...you guys are the best!!!
