She keeps licking her butt area

We just got the dogs back from doggy camp on Sat. Leia's been licking her butt area a fair bit. Today we noticed she did it more so than normal. When we were watching tv tonite she was laying on the floor sleeping. Then she got up and started licking the floor. We looked and it was wet where she was laying. It smelt really foul. I wiped it up and used the Nature's Miracle. Then I noticed she was licking her butt area again. I thought maybe she got fleas from the camp, so I took a closer look. There didn't seem to be any sign of fleas but I did notice that same foul smell from her. I wiped it with a wet face cloth, but she is still licking it and it still smells.

I am going to call the vet tomorrow, but just wanted some input. Any thoughts? Is this what is called incontingence? (sp)

Sounds like her anal glands need to be expressed. Vet can do that or even a groomer. It does make a dog very uncomfortable.

I agree! It sounds like an anal gland problem. Were they eating there normal diet at camp?

Yes that could be exactly it! That completely slipped my brain

Jan - they didn't eat their normal diet at camp. They didn't get any RMB's b/c the camp wasn't comfortable feeding them. So they only had beef mix. So that would explain the Anal gland issue. I might try some pumpkin. They've been back on their regular diet since Sat. night (almost 2 full days) so it should take care of the glands in a couple of more days.

If it doesn't clear up, i would definitely take her to the vet. I would think that just feeding the beef mix certainly caused the problem. Next time you will have make sure that she gets some ground bone. Leia doesn't have a problem with chicken does she? You could always get her some ground chicken and bone from Surrey Meat packers.

Libby had been doing the same thing for the last week. My groomer came to the house on Wednesday to groom Molly. I told her what Libby was doing to see if she had any ideas. Took one look at the anal glands and then expressed them. Definitely was the problem. The groomer also told me to try and stop her if she kept doing it as it can create more of a problem but, Libby hasn't even licked once.

Hope its the same problem.
