Nina is arriving this evening.
She is 13 weeks old.
The breeder told me last night that she adds water to her kibble....as it slows her down a bit from gobbling it up too fast.
I will do the same....but my question is when can i slowly wean her to eating it dry....or is it better to always moisten it?
Also...can anyone recommend any healthy treats that i can use when we are trainning her.
Thanks

Congratulations on finally getting your baby :) I moistened Shakira's food also to keep her from gobbling, but you know what, boxers gobble, plainly spoken that is how they eat. Shakira gobbles and never chews her kibble. I would say that at 13 weeks she shouldn't need it moistened, but you could do that if you want, not as good for the teeth though. As far as a healthy treat, I use Old Mother Hubbard Little Bits for training. Shakira loves them and will do about anything for them. Also on www.DrsFostersmith.com you can order little chewy or crunchy chicken, liver, or beef treats made just for training and they love those also. On the Old Mother Hubbard treats, what I sometimes will do is take those little bits treats and put a couple of handfuls in a bowl and pour a small single serve size container of Yogurt (low fat) vanilla or any flavor really over the treats and mix and coat them. Then I lay them out on a cookie sheet individually and freeze for a few hours, after that I remove them and place in a freezer zip lock bag and store in the freezer, they are great anytime for our babies, especially when it's extremely hot outside. Good Luck with little Nina and hopefully you can get some pics up for all of us to see.

When I fed kibble, I always put a little warm water on it. Most dogs do not chew their kibble, they swallow it whole. Therefore it really doesn't make a difference to their teeth.

Congratulations on your new addition!! appicon
Watered-down kibble is not a bad thing...it can actually make a gravy for the kibble. You can wean her off that anytime if that's what you want. As for healthy training treats, I always use peanut butter (on a spoon held to your side works great for leash training!) Also, stuff a kong with peanut butter...freeze it and it will be hours of pure contentment for your doggie! Yougurt (plain) is GREAT especially for curbing the boxer GAS!! I also treat my babies every second night to cottage cheese on their kibble. They LOVE it!!
Mother Hubbard has good healthy training treats...liver always being the favourite around here! Best of luck with Nina! Looking forward to pics and posts of all her adventures! :)
