I have Roxanne signed up for obedience classes which start with dogs next Saturday. I am so excited, the trainer is excellent and has alot of advice. I explained to her that Roxanne turns spastic when in new situations and she told me to make sure her treats were much more interesting than the other dogs. The smellier the better. I practiced with hot dogs and Roxanne was definitely very good and easily trained with them but I wonder if they are harmful for her. I used very small pieces. Any suggestions? Commercial dog treats aren't interesting enough for her.

Have you tried cheese? Megan is interested in everything but the treats. We used hot dogs those worked for the first class than forget it. Every class we have do have a new treat. We used cheese, bits of snausages (dog treats), melon (cantaloupe, watermelon, honeydew), grapes and a lot of other stuff. Cheese worked well because you could do american or montrey jack or cheddar. And it was cheese but different.

I agree with Malinda --- Oscar loves chunks of cheese. Also, dry cat food really sends him, french fries (not that healthy, I know), home-baked doggie biscuits, or small bits of real jerky or summer sausage. He also loves fruits/vegetables but for training I use any of the above --- I think the *smell factor* does it for him. :) Good luck!

Boxer Insane
We have just had a Boxer through our beginners obedience class who sounds very much like Roxanne. Her human ended up using a variety of treats. Cheerios, cheese, roast chicken, baked liver, and cat food. This Boxer turned from being quite a wild girl into the star of the class :)

Have fun with Roxanne.

I am very confident we will have a good time. She is really responsive now and will sit lay down and come. I need to work on going from a down position to up position. She looks at me like I am insane when I tell her to sit after lay down. We are getting much closer to agility!!
