My baby, Kissy Shebang had a ball the other day at my friends house, running, bucking, & leaping with her 2 dogs. I was outside as well as saw she did not trip or bumped into anything. She was fine on the way home. Later, she could barely walk & held the rt hind leg up. She had difficulty sitting and could not leap onto my bed. My heart was breaking for her. I ran to the vet yesterday morning, who took x-rays and says a ligament in her knee may be ripped. She is a rescue, and since both knees looked suspicious in the x-ray, ( the rt one being worse) something may have happened to her when she was found on the streets at 1-1/2 yrs old. Now, she is on anti-inflammatory pain meds and NO running for 7 days and this morning was back to her old self. The vet states surgery might be needed in the furture if she continues to have problems after vigorous running or playing. I am concerned that if the ligament knits together on its on, it will not knit as strong as it should be and will knit together w/scar tissue. If we feel the need for surgery in the future which I would hate to put her through, she will have scar tissue anyhow, and probably arthritis as well. She is only 4 yrs old now. Has anyone else had this experience? Any advice would be appreciated. Jann

I would suggest glocosamine/chondrotin/msm combo in liquid form. I used this for Jack when he had acl problems. It worked wonders for him.

The surgery (TPLO) is great. The dog is 100& afterwards. It gave Holly years back. She acts like a pup again. I will not kid you the recovery time was no picnic and it is expensive.
If you can afford it I would do it sooner than latter because it sounds like both will eventually need the repair. Holly had hers 1 year apart. Again it was 2 tough summers but Holly thanks me daily. She runs with me again, wrestles with the other dogs, boxer burns with no after limping. She is a happy 5 year old boxer.

My oldest had TPLO in 2004 for a ruptured ACL. As stated before, the recovery is very long and not fun for you or the dog. But, my baby wouldn't have been able to walk let alone run without it. I have had him on Cosequin DS since and it has truly helped. It is a glucosamine/chondroitin mix. Dogs with this surgery tend to get some arthritis in the joint that was repaired as they age and this also helps ease arthritis pain. Also, I've read fish oil is good for lubricating joints. It's true that the surgery is costly and the recovery is not easy, but it's so worth giving your baby a quality of life back. Also, if you do the surgery, make sure to either look into physical rehabilitation or really, really stay dedicated to the recovery steps your surgeon will give you. It's very important and helps reduce them rupturing the opposite leg due to overcompensating for the injured leg. Good luck!!

Thanks so much!

I could not care less about the cost..LOL! She is my baby and I am committed to her well being. I get what you say about the recovery...so if that means giving up a springtime trip somewhere...no prob. Mom's are the best MD's after the MD. Thank you so much for your advice.

I found the liquid combination of glu/chon/msm worked faster and better than the pill form. I had Jack on this combination several times. Once we were using the pills and I switched mid-stream to liquid and within several days I noticed a big difference in his leg. For me it seemed to be the best way to administer too!

For Sheryl!

Thanks for your advice. I have a large order of it coming from Dr. Fosters & Smith...so we'll see what happens.
