Hi, I just wanted to know if anyone has had any experience with renal dysplasia our dog Lucy who will 2 on January 30 was just diagnosed on Friday. The vet who specializes in internal medicine said she could live for a few weeks or months with this condition. Our Vet. was more optomistic we have to give her IV fluids under the skin and she has to eat a kidney friendly diet. If anyone has any experience with this I'd love to hear about it.
Thanks,
Mary Ann

1 month prior to diagnosis she became weak and listless coughing, urinating while sleeping & walking hunched over because of pain. We took her to the vet first thought that she got bit by a tick while playing in the leaves. Was put on pain med. and antibiotics and seemed to be fine.
Three weeks later she peed in her sleep 3 times but didn't think anything was wrong. A week before Christmas she started vomiting a couple a times a day for 2 days. On the third day she couldn't keep any food down and refused to drink. We took her back to the vet first thought she had pancreatis was given antibiotics and IV fluids. Next day vomiting continued back to vet she kept her did abdominal x rays blood & urine tests. Test showed high kreatin ( not sure of the spelling) levels . By then we knew it was some form of renal failure. We then took her to a specialist to preform a ultrasound which showed that she had severly under developed kidneys.

I am very sorry to hear about your girl. This is a terrible disease that has taken too many boxers, too soon. There is research being done to help find a DNA marker to prevent future puppies being born with this.

One of my pups had this many years ago. My vet's son had her and went with holistic treatment. She lived to be four years old. I don't know if this will help your girl, but it can't hurt to try. High creatinine levels are serious.

To help future boxers, can I ask a big favor? The research is being done at the Broad Institute and they need DNA samples from affected dogs and if possible their parents and siblings. This DNA will help them find a marker and to help breeders to not breed affected dogs. More information can be found at:

Once again, I am so sorry to hear about your girl.

I too am sorry about your girl. :( I hope you find a treatment that will help her live as long as possible.
The reason I asked is because I've been studying renal failure. I'm hoping my little guy doesn't develop this, but his urine came back with protein in it. The first test was a +3, but a week later it was down to +2. I'm hoping it continues to go down to normal. His bloodwork is all normal. I'm waiting on test restults from a hospital/teaching college. The good thing is my vet thinks it is either pre or post kidney since bloodwork is okay. Anyway, I've been reading about renal failure and causes and early symptoms. Lucky for me, it's usually found in bloodowork. My prayers go out to you and your girl.
