This morning after our walk, I noticed bloody paw prints throughout my WHOLE house!!!! Ok, yeah, I freaked out, chased both doggies down. Well, its Adam. He has worn his back, inside, toe nail completely down. It was bleeding like mad!!!! My kitchen looked like a bloody war had just happened.
Ok, so I'm pinning down a 90 lbs dog, yelling at the kids to get towels, the first aid kit, etc. The kids aren't helping, so i called DH. He's no help (what'd I expect right? LOL) he simply said "tell Adam to sit and put pressure on the nail. Duh!!! The trick is to get a dog in pain to hold still, yeah right. So, by now I'm covered in blood (in my work clothes).

Ok, 20 minutes later, the bleeding is stopped, Adam is resting in the kennel (not a happy puppy). I get my bloody war zone cleaned up.

Now, in looking at the nail, it is obviously just worn down. BUT - it appears the quick (i think anyway ;) ) is sticking out. (??) I dont know, Im not familiar with toe anatomy :D I trimmed the frayed edges on the toe down, the cleaned it really good. Is there anything i should do about this piece that sticking out? its right in the middle of the nail so i think its the quick.

HELP!!!

P.S. I am at work, but my sister is home with Adam to keep an eye on him, but I still feel SO GUILTY leaving my baby!!!!

it's odd that only one nail would be worn down so much to bleed so badly, is it possible the dog caught the nail on something (frayed rug with looped piling is the usual culprit). Call your vet, they might want to remove it and cauterize is so the bleeding stops or cover it up with a nail cover or bandage. BTW-use cornstarch next time, won't burn like the chemical quick stops and you probably have it around. Put a pinch on the bleeding nail and apply pressure. Also, heres a trick I learned in class to be able to pin down an unhappy dog - lie the dog down on it's side on the floor, you are on the dogs back area and not near the legs. You can then lean over the dog (no onto) and grasp his down front leg (the one on the floor) with your left hand and his down back leg (the one on the floor) with your right hand. Holding his down legs prevents him from getting up since he needs to push those limbs under him. Then someone can get the bleeding to stop - assuming the kids help ;)

Is it soft? If so it is the quick. Apply quick stop (a syptic powder), or if you don't have that baking powder will work. It will help seal it up and keep it from bleeding anymore. It sounds to me like your pup tore his nail. My Lucky did that once and once I got the bleeding to stop he healed up real quick. Also put an old sock over the foot with a rubber band. That will help protect it until the nail starts to regrow around it. That will only take a few days. Hope this helps.

Corn starch works as well. Just dab some right on the quick and it will clot. My vet also told me to keep and eye on it, if it looks infected, take him in.

Vegas ripped the tip of his nail off playing on the ashphalt. The quick will eventually retreat once the air starts to dry it. You may have to keep him off concrete/ashphalt for a while. We could play with Vegas for a week, he went bonkers with out excercise.

Good luck.

Tyson ripped his nail once and it freaked me out. I came out of the shower to a puppy w/ a bloody paw! :( His healed just fine on its own, but like others mentioned watch it and if it looks like it's getting infected or his pain seems to get worse, I'd take him to the vet.

Thanks guys!!!! I'm still freaked out- worried about my baby!!! But my sister is home, so at least he's not alone.

I called my vet they suggested cornstarch to stop bleeding too- at least i know for the next time! I dont have any, so i will get some next time i go to the store. They also told me the usual signes to watch for infections. The vet also suggested that after a few days of healing, I should get Adam some boots. :D

Now I am kinda worried about ALL of his nails!!! His front paws have longer nails, I try to file them (which he really hates!) so we pretty much just go on our daily walks to maintain his nails. But now his front nails are still really long and his back nails are really short!! UG!!

Thanks for the idea about those nail covers!! Maybe after Adam's all healed up, I could put those on his back nails so they dont wear down so fast.

putting a little piece of toilet paper on it like you would a shaving cut also will work if you don't have anything else.

When I was pregnant with my son I dropped a boneing knife in my foot and regular old flour stopped the bleeding in seconds. And I was on blood thinners. Tyson and on odd nail that he seems to break all of the time and I just try to keep an eye on it. Hope Adam is better before long, poor baby.
