Question: Wanting to get a second boxer

I'm not sure where to ask this so here it is: Xena is three years old. We love her. She is spayed and we'd like to add a second boxer to the home. We are looking for a puppy. Any advice on how old Xena should be before getting a second boxer? Should we look for a male or another female? We are going to spay the new one too. We just want a friend for Xena and another boxer in the house to share our love with. Suggestions anyone?

PS. We are not good at adopting adult dogs. We are better with raising pups in our house.

Any time after about 2 years old is ideal - so no worries there It would, however, be safest to aim for a male since you already have a female. Multiple bitches are less likely to get along than male-male or male-female combinations, and if they fight (which usually only happens after both bitches are 2+ years old) then they're often very serious fights. You'd maximise your chances of a harmonious household if you picked a male pup rather than a female.

I agree with gmacleod. We have two boys, Apollo (2.5) and Rocky(8mos). Before we got Rocky, we had Jelly Bean(passed in June). It seemed to me that the male/female combo was the best. Jelly was a special needs dog and Apollo was so good with her. Rocky is a hellraiser d and Apollo is an angel , and Rocky tortures(playfully) Apollo every chance he gets. Apollo is a gentle soul and Rock is just that, a rock(he's dingy and a big boy that thinks he's still 10#). Anyhow, I have seen and read about so many problems with female/female combos, so I wouldn't suggest that. Having 2 is so much more entertaining by the way! I think that I'd better add, I love my two boys dearly, and just sigh at the differences

I just got another boxer (yesterday). I agree, female and male (not two females). Only mine are only days apart.
