Are there any health advantages to getting a boxers ears done? And if so, how old is to old to get them done?

First day back on the board after being gone for a month and I will give you MY advice, as Im sure some will disagree.
First of all, I DONT believe that cropping the ears prevents ear problems. I have spoken to 3 vets in my area who will NOT crop and says it shows No health advantage to have this done.So in my opinion if you .....dont show, dont crop.
Next if I remember correctly it must be done between the ages of 9-12 weeks.
Also please make sure you understand everything about cropping before you make up your mind, know what type of crop, how long to heal, find a vet and most important get references from boxer owners who have had this vet crop their boxers ears.
Now, I do happen to like the look of both the crop and natural ears, I just happen to think that with the crop they look more like a protector. But the choice is yours and I wish you luck with what ever you decide.

Well said Cindy, I totally agree someone once told me that Boxers ears will stay cleaner if they are cropped, also they are prone to ear infections of they are left uncropped. Frankly that is a load or crap. I have two Boxers one cropped, and one natural, I prefer the cropped look, but didn't want to go through the after care again with our second. It is a matter of choice, the aftercare in my opinion takes a lot of dedication. If you have it done, find a good vet, that is willing to show you past crops and let you contact those owners.

Completely Boxer Crazy
I just watched the boxer "Breed All About It" on Animal Planet today and I was happy to hear the vet confirm what I've always said about ear cropping - "It is purely cosmetic surgery".

That's all I have to say about that cuz I know it's been discussed before.

It all depends on who you ask. I certainly would not crop just because there was a possibility of health benefits.

Cropping is a personal choice and if you decide to crop keep in mind that it is a lot of work looking after the ears and you could be taping the ears for up to a year. There is also the possibility that the ears will never stand up properly and if you get a bad crop, you could have a funny looking dog. Your dog could also die on the table, it has happened to people on the board here. It is risky putting a puppy to sleep at that age. If you do decide to crop, make sure that your vet knows not to use Acepromazine. It is a pre-anesthetic that can be deadly to boxers and some vets don't know this.

Personally I prefer the cropped look and I had my boxer cropped, but I wouldn't do it again.

Cropping should be done between 8-12 weeks.

Good luck with your decision.

There are lots of previous posts on this subject. This topic is a hotbed, or hornet's nest.

Boxer Pal
We had Buddy's ears cropped and it took about 7 months of dedicated after care. Frankly if we had it to do again I don't think we would. Buddy is our first Boxer and we thought that you were supposed to get their ears cropped. We had never seen a Boxer not cropped. The vet had told us that we would have less chances of ear infections by having his ears cropped. Her words were you can pay me now or pay for it later, your choice. I guess we should have clued in that it wasn't a popular choice to have them done when she had to bring in a retired vet to do the surgery. In retrospect I should have questioned her as to why she recommended the surgery but wouldn't perform the procedure. Frankly, Buddy has had a lot of ear trouble and I now have to do a daily ear cleaning regime with a solution that I get from the vet. I have since seen some Boxers with long ears and they have the cleanest looking ears! It's your personal choice, but I honestly feel now that it is for cosmetics only.
P.S. We left that vet after Buddy turned 6 months old and we now have a vet that we can truly trust.
