There are alot of posts about boxers biting 6 yr. olds but all of the boxers seem to be older. Our boxer Roxy is 4 months old and seems to go nuts sometimes and attacks our 6 yr. old as well as me and husband. We had a trainer for when we got her and she thought us to do the submissive hold and to show Roxy that she is not the leader of the pack. Well we have tried this along with trying to distract her with toys. But nothing seems to work. This is very frustrating because our 6 yr. old is really scared of the dog when she comes by him. Can someone please give me some advice on how we should be handling Roxy.

I would end all play with her. If it means putting her in another room or you leaving the room, turn your back on her and leave. I was taught the submissive hold also for my Chow and that worked great for her, but not for my Boxer. I tried the replacing my fingers for a toy or chew and that didn't work, I tried screaming OUCH and that didn't seem to work either. I did find that turning my back on her and leaving her alone in another room is what actually got her. Now she is one year old and she is not at all like she was as a puppy. I don't think that your Roxy is really attacking, boxer puppies play very aggressive and that is probably what she is doing. Don't use harsh punishment and never smack her. Just ignore her, try that and let us know if that works for you.

Easiest advice I have is, keep the dog on leash even in the house, this allows complete control over the dog and will prevent him from chasing the kid. Also, when you don't have time to watch the dog, put him in the crate. End of story.
This is what I have to do w/ Tyson when my friend's 5 year old comes over. As Tyson gets bigger, she gets more scared of him (just because of his size). He also likes to jump, so I don't want him to jump on her. She, like other kids, get very vocal when they are scared, and the high pitched sound gets Tyson very excited. He's on leash every time she comes over until I can trust him to behave around her. We still work w/ him so that he is learning how he should be acting, but having him on leash gives us that added security and makes the 5 year old feel more comfortable.

We don't have issues with biting, but when we have crawling babies over, I keep Porter attached to me. I loop his leash through my pant belt loop and then put the leash through the handle (kind of hard to explain) so he is attached to me and clip him on. He can stay with all of us and it teaches him to be calm with the little ones. This might be good to do with your puppy as you work out teaching "no bite." Good luck.

Thanks

Thanks everyone for your advice. Its nice to know that other people also have this problem. We have noticed that when Joey (son) isn't around or at grandmas Roxy is alot more tame, so maybe it is because he is a kid and is exciting to her. The biting just gets frustrating. Wish us luck and thanks for everyones advice!

Hi there I feel your anxiety over this issue.
When Buster was a puppy he always chased the heels of my son in paticular. I didnt like at all, and did have worries over it. Constant dedication and distraction methods helped and never leave them alone together.
buster did grow out of it eventually, with the help of lots of toys and guidance. So there is light at the end of the tunnel for you...Im sure.

really?

How long is this tunnel? I have the same problem with my pup. My kids (2,3,6) cant go near her without her mouth opening to bite them. Even if shes laying down and they just want to hug her or smooch her. She could be sitting down and my kis go to pet her and her mouth opens up. She doesnt bite them because I stop her before she can. Usually if she does its not hard but I would love to sit in my living room and watch my kids play or hug our pup and not worry about them getting chewed on. Its sad. shes gotplenty of chew toys. and its always the same game. My kids go to pet her.........they yell "Dont bite" I go over to her and pull her away,........she attemps to go for my hand,.........I say "ouch! no, dont bite" and give her a chew toy. the toy will distract her for a few seconds and then she goes for my kids again. So lately shes been spending alot of alone time. Or shes tied up next to me if were watching tv or something. I hate it. I want her to understand to play nice....but how?

Our life with a little boy & his Boxer

Last year for Christmas my 3 yr old grandson wanted a red dog like mine, well needless to say Santa brought him that red Boxer pup,you may think a 3 yr old is to young, but I think not. When he got her that was his baby, she was 8wks old her little feet didn't hit the floor until she was too big for him to carry, which was only about 1mth.This pup worships him,she has never been rough with him & they play & scuffle all the time,he will tell you she is his sister & they are never apart, this pup knows she belongs to him,Mom & Dad only feed her & potty trained her.Well she is 1yr old now & he is 4yrs,now she takes care of him, nobody messes with her brother, she is very social with kids but leary of adults. His Granny was playing with him, chasing him down the hall to the bedroom & Dyla Doo nipped Granny on the leg & let her know not to play rough with her little boy, that is the only time she has ever shown any aggression toward anybody. When she saw he was alright, she was fine.It is really amazing when you see these two together, they are connected. He even named her, his name is Dylan & he named her Dyla Doo after his name. So, I have a hard time understanding these other pups, playing ruff with the kids, when they are around them all the time.Even my dogs never get rough with little kids.LOL,Hanley

I have the same problem with my 12 week old boxer male.
He never tries to bite me, my wife or my son.
It's just my lil girl he bites and it isnt hard he is just playing but as he gets bigger he could really hurt her and not mean it.
I never let him play alone with the kids.
I am always there to keep an eye on things.
How can we get him to stop?
Should I try the leash when she wants to play with him?

I have hope

Hi there,
well I finally called a private trainer. She sound promising. She says that all dogs have aggressive tendencies. Its just a matter of how well you train them. She says my dog is struggling with my kids to be the alpha dog and her way of doing that is to fight them for territory. Even though shes not biting to hurt them, shes biting to show them whos boss. Anyhow shes coming over next wednesday to work with Porsha and the kids. She says its all about the body language. She promises that the problem will be solved in ten minutes. Of course wed work with her after that. Im excited. Wish me luck. Ill keep you all posted on her progress and even give pointers.
