Could someone tell me which profession is lower on the scale of life? My beautiful 7 mon old brindle boy was adopted several months ago and still struggles daily w/so many medical problems. I've been lucky enough to trace his life history 1)neglected home 2) Pet Store 3) Puppy broker and finally his so called "breeder" in OH. I want to write a letter to this person asking if he has a clue to the profound impact his lousy decisions make on the life and soul of his dogs. I don't want anything from him nor do I expect to make a difference but I have to wonder how he sleeps at nite. Thanks in advance for educating me.

A puppy broker is essentially the middle man who deals with the puppy mills and brings the dogs to the stores. Hunte Corp., headquartered in MO, is the largest example of this.

This reminds me of something that happened to me last week. Unfortunately, the only store close to me that sells ultra premium pet food also sells puppies. Of course, everytime Emma and I go there, she wants to say hello to the puppies. There was a brindle boxer girl that I just had to say hello to...I had no intention of buying her but I wanted to give her some love. Anyway, I asked the employee whether I could see her information, and the name of her breeder. He told me I could see her "pedigree" but that i couldn't see the breeder's name (per the breeder's request) and that if I bought her I could see the breeder's name. Anyway, I told him that that didn't make any sense since "wouldn't it be responsible to see who has bred the dog one MIGHT buy?" He agreed but said that he couldn't give me the info but assured me that the breeder was a "registered breeder". This whole interaction upset me sooo much. First, because the only reason I wanted the breeder's info was so that I coudl write her and tell her she sucks! Second, because the breeder clearly knows she sucks because she won't allow her name to be given out! Finally, because this ignorant employee (and probably the ignorant customers who buy these dogs) actually thought that "registered breeder" was something good, something that indicates quality as opposed to what it really is, a commercial breeder who perpetuates the puppy shop horrors!! Sorry to vent, but I am sooo sympathetic to your frustration!!!

Without each other, neither would exist. A sad bunch, no matter how you look at it. :(

Ugg...you know, I would not buy anything from a store that sold puppies. I would pay the extra few bucks to have it shipped to me before supporting a place that PROFITS FROM puppy mills. I would consider the few bucks my little way of helping to shut them down. Then I would speak to the owner of the store and explain to them why you are not going to be patronizing the store any longer!

Who knows...you may just have an impact! Just an idea!

This is definitely something I've considered. Luckily, we're in the process of going Raw so I likely won't have to make that decision but you're point is well taken and good advice.

I feel the exact same way, buying from these stores just lines the pocket of those who have no interest in the breed other than to turn a quick buck and move on. There are so many really great rescue organizations out there that could use that money to save our boxers from a life of misery.

Puppy pet stores hate me

When I walk near a pet store that sells puppies (and kittens) I try to keep walking because they make me sick, sad, etc. Sometimes I go in and make it a point to say negative things in front of perspective buyers. Not loud enough to be obnoxious (maybe..) but to try and educate them. I'm sure I've been cursed at and laughed at but I don't care. My kids now understand and my son even tried to explain the dangers of pet store puppies to his friend.

I guess pet stores that sell pups arent common here in N. LOuisiana, or i just havent run in to them?? Our pet store has adoption days(Petco or petsmart..cant remember which it is) and a local pet shop, that helps out rescue and the humane society to get the animals adopted out..

We do have a place called Bonnie and Clyde Trade Days in Arcadia, LA(about 6 miles from me) and they do a trade days every 3rd weekend(its this weekend actually) and they have a pet ally. And there are so many BYBs its ridiculus. I always check them out b/c I love to pet/play with cute little puppies. There is one woman who is always there and always has a litter there of 3 different breeds and its ridiculus. Ive never seen a boxer there thank god, or i wouldnt be able to resist it! most of them sell toy/small breed dogs and "mixed breeds" such as snoorkies(snauzer/yorkie).
