Just taking an informal poll. My Murphy is 3 months. I'm using two collars, one is a nylon band with quick-clip connector, the other is a combination nylon and choke. But he's starting to pull a lot when walking him, and i'm worried about hurting his neck. does anyone use a harness? what is everyone using? and how old is old enough to worry about teaching him to 'heel'?

I use a harness with Boo ....Its called HOLT....it has helped a great deal ....he doesn't pull as hard or as much .....we're still working on the heel ...but he does pretty good ....All the collars I used before ....he pulled very hard ...and like you I was afraid he would hurt his neck .....The pronge collar uauslly stops that ....but I WILL NOT use a pronge collar on my puppy ....I even tried the gentle leader .....didn't work as well for Boo as the harness does. When Boo starts to pull I always stop ...most of the time he sits ...other times he just looks back & wonders whats going on ....you may have to do this over & over again ...everytime your puppy starts to pull ....stop ...it seems to help me with Boo !! As for the harness I bought size medium ...it is adjustable...you can't miss it ..it has a pic of a boxer on it !!
Good luck ...it takes time & lots of patience.!

    Dog Named Boo

    hi Boo's family,
How old is Boo, he's a little cutie. as far as the walking goes, when my Murphy starts to pull, i also stop. i let him know that i'm the one controlling the pace, and he's pretty good about stopping and then sitting (on command). I wouldn't use a Prong Collar either, but i may try the harness.
by the way, catch any Yankee Spring Training games down there?

We use the Sporn harness on Apollo. It goes under his front legs, instead of across the chest. The theory being that the across the chest one makes them pull even more. The Sporn works well with Apollo, but we are still working on loose leash walking with him.

I haver only used regular leather buckle collars on my dogs. They trained with them and they walk beautifully without pulling or lagging or veering.

I had one of those on Victor but he got it off some how and I had a harness on him too and he would work his mouth somehow and get the harness loose so I have gone with the quick-clic collar and it has stayed on him just fine. He is going to be a Houdini!!

FYI while on the subject of collars, since Bubba was grown I have used a wide flat leather collar, a couple of months ago I took Bubbs to the vet with me in tears, I knew he had cancer, he had a large red knot on his neck under his chin, come to find out it was from the big metal buckle rubbing my poor baby's neck. He now wears a snap-on nylon collar, I like the leather look better but will never use a buckle again!

Little word of caution, I had one of those snap-in puppy collars (not sure of the brand) and Simon (at 12 weeks) was walking down the street, and pulling the leash. The snap came loose, and I ended up chasing him down 25th St. in Manhattan. Not pleasant. We immediately got a buckle collar.

Harnesses are great. I use one with Bing when walking. I find that it gives me more control - more control of him since he is secured from the chest and shoulders instead of the neck. I use the two piece type - main piece goes over head, while that piece is secured through two top/bottom holes by a snap buckle. (was that sentence a run on or what?) At this point, I get a kick out of him being his puppy self and running around in circles as we walk - jumping, going nutz when seeing people or other dogs. Not too interested in him walking by my side yet. So, the harness gives my much more control and its much more comfortable for him - no more sounds like someone is choking him. Try one, you'll see what I mean.
