hey all. Ive recently run into a problem. My puppy has realized she can go upstairs now. We keep a gate up but she knocks it down. The other day she mustve been upstairs at some point during the day because when we went up to go sleep i happened to walk by my parents room and saw tht there was poo on my older dogs bed upon closer look i found pee beside it as well. So i cleaned it up but the older dog refused to sleep on the bed. The next day i was upstairs and the pup came up and went into my parents room to the bed again she walked aroun on it and began sniffing so i thought she was gonna lie down.. so i went to the washroom and came out and it looked like she was sitting on the bed..turns out she was peeing on it (when she sits she doesnt sit all the way.. her stub gets in the way so its hard to tell if shes sitting or peeing) So i put the bed case in the laundry and tried o wash the pee off the cushion part with a wet cloth. Today she walked up to the pillow and right away squatted and began peeing.

Any idea why she's doing this??

A nice soft absorbant surface to pee on.:) She could also be showing a little dominance to your older dog. You need to make sure that she doesn't have access to the bed. You could try soaking it in Natures Miracle. It will take the smell out so that your puppy is attracted back to the same spot.

You are probably giving your puppy too much freedom. If you can't keep a close eye on her, I would either put her in her crate or you can tether her to you with her leash so that she can't wander off and pee some where. Sniffing at the ground it a sure sign that she's looking for somewhere to pee. :)

I picked up from your post that the puppy is restricted from being in the particular areas of the house that the older dog is allowed to be in..is this right? If so, this is hardly fair for such a young dog, especially a puppy. For animals to respect each other and you as a dominant owner they need to be treated with exactly the same amount of respect and given the same boundaries & rewards for bad/good behaviour. I am not sure if I read your post correctly but if I have I would like to suggest this: a younger dog will always pick up/copy any behaviour of the older animal/s in the house. If this puppy sees the older animal being allowed indoors etc when they are not then you are going to see bad or jealous behaviour towards you or the other dog at some stage. Please let me know if i have picked up wrong..

So are you suggesting that we should treat a young child, like an adult? A puppy needs to learn appropriate behavior just like a child.

Sorry, this just made me laugh, but as I was laughing I was thinking the same thing as you but should also add warm and dry (not like outside):D:
And I also agree pup has too much unsupervised freedom.
Gotta watch them lil buggers like a hawk:D:

Good luck

Of course a child should be treated like a child and not an adult but a dog is not human..At home I have a young female and an 4yo old maltese. Yes he is a small dog but because she is not allowed on the furniture, neither is he and because she is not allowed to eat dog bones on the carpet, neither is she etc etc. When we brought her home it took a while to teach him the new boundaries he had and until he picked this up she would copy his behaviour. Of course, I was corrected and yes she is allowed to be wherever the older dog is so there is a different underlying problem.

Good luck..
