Boxer Buddy
My boxer guy Zeus, is 15 weeks and he is a normal pup and everything..hyper, funny.. we have one little problem though.

I sometimes take him out on leash probably about 60% of the time out in the backyard, he has no problem walking on it and walks pretty nicely without pulling or anything.

The minute I take him out front, he goes crazy. Starts choking himself by pulling on the leash, won't calm down. He just wont settle down, Id love to take him for a walk, but i can't even get him to calm down even for a second he just pulls and pulls and continues choking himself.

Any suggestions????

thank you.

I use the method, pulling = stop. When my dog pulls I just stop like a tree or change direction. It is very frustrating but it works. If you search on this site there must be many more suggestions.

My girl is 14 weeks and she was also pulling so hard..She is only 22 pounds and it was difficult, so I can't imagine her at 60 pounds..I bought a harnass called sensation harnass, put out by a company called softtouch concepts. It has helped tremendously, if you want I will try and find you the web info..

Exactly. ;) You can spend a fortune on handy things like harnesses but they don't really teach the dog how to walk nicely, except not to pull when it's on. ;) As soon as you slap that regular ole flat collar on, they will be back to pulling you down the street.

Since your pup is still young, you have ample opportunity to teach loose leash walking before he becomes a 70lb bulldozer. But I don't think letting a 15 week old pup yank itself around at the end of the leash can be good for his little neck.

Here's a good training article that can help you gain his cooperation without him choking himself:

Good Luck!

Luca was exactly the same but if you see things from their point of view at that age it's totally understandable, everything is just so exciting. I tried the stand still thing but all he did was come back to my side just so he could get a better run up for when we started walking again. In the end I decided not to try and lead train him at first until he got a bit more used to the great outdoors, I put him on a longer lead so he wasn't choking and just let him wander and sniff, just a little way from the house. When tis became familiar to him I started to lead train by doing the walking in the opposite direction thing every time he pulled. It was hard work but it paid off. I then did the same thing gradually further afield and it worked! He's 9 months now and apart from when he sees a dog or something exciting, he walks very well and responds to the word heel. It is hard work and you have to be consistent, and I have to confess I never managed it with my other two, but maybe age has given me more patience! Good luck.
