Hi everyone, My 3 yr. old boxer, Cassius, has thrown up 3x in the past week. Each time it has just been bile--no food, etc. 2x it was at the dog park where he had just eaten grass. (Sorry, I know this is gross). I understand that sometimes dogs will eat grass so as to make them puke something up, but he didn't really have anything to puke up. Just bile.

Anyway, I also noticed that he leaked 2x this week on the bed while sleeping. He has done this before from time to time (like once every six months), so we have never been that concerned.

We recently switched him to Nutro and Nutro Max food from California Natural b/c of convenience (we just moved and the local stores don't sell Cal. Nat.). Has anyone had similar experiences with this food or should I be more concerned?? It seems like every time we try a new food other than California Natural some problem occurs!

Thank you!!

Hi Dayna,

Dempsey (9 1/2 month old boxer puppy) dosen't appear to have food allergies, but our 23 month old Mastiff (Tango) does. Does Cassius have allergies? In the process of trying to find a food that Tango could eat without problems, we had tried Nutro and quickly learned it wasn't for him. Had a lot of problems with diarrhea & puking from it. The Nutro formulas have wheat flour, ground whole wheat, poultry fat, corn gluten meal & beet pulp in them, many times dogs with food allergies or sensitive tummies don't tolerate these ingredients well. You're right that dogs will sometimes eat grass to make themselves puke since they seem to know what they've eaten just dosen't agree with their tummies. Since we have 2 dogs now, we feed them identically to make it easier for us and to accomodate Tango's needs. We stay with human grade kibble with some supplementation (eggs, yogurt, fruit, veggies, Vit. E, canned mackeral/salmon). We've found that the Solid Gold is the food Tango tolerates the best followed by Canidae, California Natural, Wellness.

Hope this helps,
Penny

I agree with the above post. Try a better grade food with less ingredients. Hope it gets better. Heather

Boxers usually throw up bile because they are hungry. You probably need to feed more Nutro than you did Innova. Try feeding him more. :)

My female used to throw up 2 or 3 times a week when I had her on Nutro NC. Something in the food must not have agreed with her because she has been fine ever since I switched her to Canidae.

We used to have the all the gang on Nutro NC and then switched to lamb & rice but they all threw it up shortly after eating. I have them on Pro Plan for sensitive stomachs/has salmon and all the omega oils they need. Their coats have gotten super shiny, not near as much shedding and Dozer's allergies have really calmed down since the switch. He is allergic to the metals in his collars and would break out in hives. Of course now they have fishy breath after they eat wackicon, but no more ralphing :).

Thank you all for your helpful insights. We've switched him back to Cal. Natural and haven't seen any more problems. . . now, the only problem is that he sprained his wrist playing at the dog park!! It's always something but that's why we love him!
