Protein in urine?

To start, a couple of days before Christmas Eve Buster had a couple of potty accidents. I know it wasn't "marking" by where and when he did it. I thought maybe he had something going on but it was very early in the morning (2:00 am) and I had been cleaning all day and night. Well, on Christmas Eve I was out doing last minute errands and DH calls and says Buster has a discharge coming out of his eurethra. Well, it was 11:55 am, the vet closes at noon so I run by there. The vet is gone checking on cattle and they leave a message for him to call. He calls, I tell him what is going on. He suspected marking and pre-ejaculate because Buster is coming into maturity (he will be 7 months next week). I told him I didn't think so. I felt it was an infection of some sort. He told me to meet him at the office and he would give me antibiotics to try and then to bring him in when he was done.
I took him in today, they did a urinalysis on him. Things look okay EXCEPT for he has a higher level of protein in his urine, which is usually caused by kidney problems or infections. We are getting him neutured next week and they are going to do a whole blood profile on him and another urinalysis to see if the level is still up or if it was due to something else. Now, my question is what else could cause a high level of protein in the urine? Could it be high protein food? I hope not, because I just ordered Orijen dog food. Any input on this would be appreciated. I did some research on the web and I really didn't find too much except for kidney problems. Any knowledge is appreciated.

I don't have much advice to offer, although I do know that large amounts of protein in the urine can indicate a kidney problem. Was the urine sample taken in the morning or on an empty stomach? This, or a 24-hour test may provide a more accurate result. I would probably wait until they do the second test before I jump to any conclusions. Sometimes an increased level can come from ingesting large amounts of high protein foods (organ meats, etc.) Good luck and please keep us updated!

The only thing that bothers me is the "accidents" he had right before Christmas. I had noticed a few dribbles on my carpet before a couple of times, but since he is a puppy, I didn't think much of it. I am wondering if he has a kidney infection. If he does, he is awfully young and it makes me worry about kidney disease. :(

He could have a slight bladder/urinary infection. This can sometimes cause loss of urine. Hang in there and let me know how it turns out!
