Boxer Pal
Greetings. I'm new to the boxer world. About two weeks ago, I brought a 6wk old male Boxer into our home. I keep him in a crate when I'm not home, and when I'm in bed. I take him outside immediately from the crate and praise him when he does his "doody" outside. I also try to keep a constant watch on him in the house, and scold him with a loud, "NO!" when he relieves himself inside the house- at which time I take him directly outside, and again reinforce his outside business with praise.
My wife has wanted a Mini Dachsund for a long time, and wanted to take advantage of the puppy age to bring one into the home at the same time. We've had a 7wk old Mini Dachsund in the house for the past few days.
My boxer is pretty rough with the Dachsund, though his behavior would probably just be considered "frolicking" with his similair-sized brothers and sisters. It's a bit more than the little Dachsund can take at times. He also "molests" the Dachsund when they're out in the yard, distracting him and preventing him from doing his "business."
I have a two-part question:
First, is there anything else I can do to reinforce the house-breaking training that I'm not already doing?
Secondly, does anyone have any training suggestions for getting my Boxer to play more "nicely" with the smaller pup?

I'd try to potty train them separately, so the little dach gets peace to do his business, without being molested.

I'm no expert, but I'd imagine all your training will need to be done separately, as pups really need one to one attention. I only do Buttons' training when Biff is out for a walk, otherwise when I'm saying "Paw" or "Sit" or whatever, the poor pup has big brother clamouring all over her, trying to show me what a clever boy HE is!

As for teaching the boxer pup to "play nicely", forget it. Hopefully in spite of her size, the dach will let him know when he goes too far.

Good luck - you've got your hands full! ;)

I agree..train them seperately. Whether it is obiedence or potty training, it's best if they have alone time.

How often do you take you pup outside to go potty? All dogs learn at a different pace and it will take much longer for them to be potty trained. Right now, they are still babies.

Also, in my experience boxers have there own kind of play...most dogs don't understand it. Your boxer pup is probably not playing roughly, but just boxer play. If the dash. gets tired of the boxer he will let him know. Or you can try to seperate them by getting the boxers attention with loud hper noises.

When your in the house, I would suggest either using a baby gate to keep them confined in a non carpeted area or attach the leach to you. This way you don't have to worry about them pottying when your not always watching.

Good luck!!

You've really got a baby on your hands, so don't expect him to learn too much too soon. Also, potty training isn't done in a matter of weeks, but months! Usually they get the idea around four months, but aren't consistent until about six months. Enjoy your little ones!
