Yesterday Pepik took off and suddenly disappeared:( when DH took him for a walk. He was missing for two long hours and we went searching for him. He is normally good at recall with HD and this never happened before. Later we found out Pepik had spotted one of his playmates some distance away.
Once he becomes friends with another dog they are Beloved Family and That's It. He doesn't run after strange dogs.
The owner of the other dog has some health issues and wasn't able to handle Pepik being on top of her dog like a madman, and after she had called our home (nobody home) and waited in vain for us to return her call to let us know she had Pepik with her, she had to call the police to pick up Pepik. (This lady is not mean and we are not mad with her for having called the police.)
So when we finally came to pick up Pepik they had brought him to the local animal shelter. And there the policeman told us that Pepik simply refused to go inside the shelter! so there they were standing outside waiting when DH and I arrived!
Pepik never refuses to go anywhere and isn't afraid of anyone.
He must have sensed the atmosphere of the shelter?
We were so relieved to have him back and with great difficulty DH and I ignored Pepik the rest of the day. He just got his meals, nothing else.
By "accident" Pepik and I looked at each other for a moment and it took enormous amount of self control to not laugh at his miserable expression.
"I'm such a good boy. How CAN you treat me like this!"
