Pink Spot On Jowels

I am very worried because I just noticed a month ago a pink spot on the jowels of my 4 year old Boxer. At first I thought he had merely scuffed it while playing ball, or bitten himself. But it is still there and I have noticed that it is a bit thicker than on the other side of his mouth.
Is this common? Could this be something to worry about?

We indeed will see a vet, but in the meantime I thought I would ask all of you out there if you knew anything!
