O.K. so my brother has his GSD and the breeder said to feed Orijen Large breed puppy? I looked it up for them and thrilled with everything (like I know) but I (from here) thought high protein and pups do not mix? Is it different in this case?

Hey there -- I was actually recommended Orijen from the local natural pet store in my area. The ingredients look great. I did notice that the puppy formula has less protein than the adult formula, so maybe it's OK? I have my pup on the Orijen regular puppy which has a little less protein than the one for large puppies. Wish I could be of more help, but I would like to know the answer as well!

LOL - nobody knows the answer for sure ;) There is conflicting evidence about whether or not high protein dry foods are excessive for pups or not. Some studies link high protein (along with excess calcium and/or overall calories) to growth disorders; others say the latter two are factors, but protein is not.

My personal inclination, given that this issue only appears to arise with dry foods - and the amounts of protein we're talking about is the same as or lower than what's found in the majority of canned foods and raw diets - is that the latter camp is probably correct. But that's purely my inclination to believe - it is not based on sighting or hearing of any definitive studies settling the issue one way or the other (and these foods haven't been around long enough for the proof to be in the pudding, so to speak).

Having said that, the larger the breed of puppy in question, and the more prone that breed to musculoskeletal disorders, the more inclined I'd be to err on the side of caution and save the high protein foods until after skeletal growth is complete.

LOL - not sure if that really helps at all. The simple answer is that it comes down to which studies you prefer to believe.

I have a family member who owns a pet supply store and they have Orijen and Canadae dog food, which are the two most popular sellers in their store.

I have been told that some puppies have had "issues" witht he orijen puppy dry dog food but as for the adult food they have not heard of anything.

there is a lady who lives not far from me who has 3 show boxers and she feeds them all Orijen as its great on their coat. And i have also been recommended Orijen from another friend that works in a pet food store.

Currently my pup feeds on canadae and eats it like it is going out of style. I would like to change his food to Orijen once he is older and his growing has slowed down a bit.

Another dog food that i have been told about from another boxer owner inthe dog park is Royal Canin and it is made especially for boxers over 54 pounds up to 100 lbs. and it helps with the hips and heart as they can get some genetic problems when they are older.

Hope this helps

This is actually what the breeder fed my puppy (medium breed puppy formula). It didn't rate too well with the dog food analysis website which reads: "Insufficient meat. Extensive use of cheap grains and other controversial fillers." Some manufacturers use buzz words such as "premium", "ultra", or other breed-specific brands to make us believe that it is the best quality food for pets. However, I have quickly learned that the best way to gauge a product's quality is by its ingredients.

Although Orijen seems to be a very good food, I think that I may switch my puppy to something else -- at least for now. I still have concerns about the protein and I think it may be a little too rich for him. As I've been transitioning him over, his stools are getting a little looser each day. I'm afraid that by the time I have him totally on the Orijen, he may end up with diarrhea. And, that won't be good. :(

I was originally recommended Eukanuba which I later found out is known is Yukkynuba

I now have Rocky on Orijen Regular Puppy food. For 3 - 4 days now I've been mixing the two foods together in an attempt to avoid such things as Diarrhea! He has been doing well with this transition and seems them both the same. I was pretty satisfied up until reading this thread. Rocky's only 10.5 weeks old @ about 15lbs. He still has an excessive amount of growth left and I certainly do not was to make him vulnerable to any sort of health issues.

If anyone has any further backround of this topic I would appreciate it. Is it worth switching him again (ughh) over to Canidae until he is full grown and put him back on Orijen? Or another dumb question, possibly continuing to mix Eukanuba with Orijen to balance out the protein (Possibly still giving him enough nutrition) until he's ready or Orijen adult???

Thanks so much.

If you go back to the feeding threads there are several in there that I started. One was about Solid Gold Barking at the Moon, which I feed my almost 8 mo. old. Gmacleod answered quite a few threads on that, which is informative. There is a controversy over whether or not too much protein can harm a puppy. Some say yes, some say no. It is whether or not you want to take that chance of it doing anything to your pet. Because of trying to find a grain free food for both my older and younger one without having to buy two different kinds, I went ahead with Barking at the Moon. It is high protein, but so far it seems to be fine. Because I have to order my food where I live, I didn't want the hassel of storing and ordering two different foods. I know if anything happens it probably will show up later down the road. But, he grew extremely fast on what I was feeding them which was a lower protein food. I have not noticed him growing any faster or gaining any more weight with BATM. It is just a personal choice, but you can go back and read some different posts and get more information from gmacleod. I guess I just feel that if you feed a raw diet, it is extremely high in protein too, so as long as you do not overfeed with higher protein food, I personally don't see much difference. Good luck on whatever you do decide.

This makes me think of when you have a baby and they tell you not to feed them cereal or solids or table food until a certain age, but you do anyway, and they turn out just fine!

hehe!
