Only Having Accidents During the Day

Boxer Pal
Our pup is almost 17 weeks now. At night, he sleeps in our room upstairs in a pop up kennel from 9 PM til 6 AM, no accidents. However during the day, we keep him downstairs in a crate for 4 hours at a time until I come home for lunch and let him out. Every time, I find that he has already going potty #1. Peeing during the day in the crate is the problem. He can hold it all night, but not for 4 hours during the day? I can't understand that. I wash his bedding every time so there's no urine smell left behind. I also clean the crate with a pet cleaner and even a tiny bleach after to kill the urine smell. Right before I go to work I take him out, hoping for him to hold it until I'm back 4 hours later. But that's not the case. By the time I'm back, there it is already too late ;(
Do you have any suggestions or advice for us? I will greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Rosie and Rocky

At night he is sleeping and, like us, if he does not wake, he does not have to go :) The rule of thumb is pups can hold it for about an hour for each month of age so for your pup four hours is the max, and in any event I guess too long for him. Anyway, does he have plenty of time between waking up and your leaving to go? With mine I found if I got up a little earlier, which I hated, and gave them a little more time they might pee a couple of times. Also, do you add any liquid to his food? Don't know what you feed but if you are adding broth, water, etc. he may go more. Some folks have luck with a crate divider so they have less room. The theory is they do not want to have to lay in it so they will hold it. I think success with this is 50/50 though. Lastly I assume this is not physical-a UTI or something. All pups are different and he may just not have a "big" tank:) Good luck

Four hours are obviously too long for your dog to hold during the day. At night dogs and human beings are alike, we sleep and our system seems to stop whatever that we have to during the day. When my dog was 17 weeks he could not even hold longer than 2 hours during the day (at night he slept straight from 10pm to 6am, with water limit by 8pm and occasionally accident in his sleep).

Mambo was sleeping through the night without having to go to the toilet from about 16 weeks but could never go this long during the day. They are continously drinking fluids during the day therefore having to go more often.

Seems very normal for boxers so don't stress (even though all my other dogs have been trained much quicker - different breeds). Mambo is now 6 months still has the occassional accident during the day - not sure why as he can be perfect for 3 or 4 weeks then out of the blue he goes on the floor.....

Thank you much for all the advice. I truly feel relieved to read that I'm not the only one going through this experience and that it will get better. I appreciate your input and great recommendations.
