Boxer Buddy
I wrote this after I "found" Benny. I've never written a poem before so please let me know what you think.
“One Night”
I lived alone and I had no one to share each day
No one with whom to run and laugh and play.
Little did I know that my life would change
All because of one night so strange.
It was a cold and windy night,
When I heard a dog outside whimpering with fright.
I paid it no mind and thought that it would be fine.
But the dog continued to whine.
“Will someone please let that dog in?”
I thought over the din.
“This isn’t fine.”
As the dog continued to whine.
Suddenly I heard something outside my door.
“Rowr rowr rowr rowr!”
I turned on my light
And there was not the dog, but the pup, I had heard all night.
He sat picture perfect and looked up at me.
I smiled down at him and said “Who could you be?”
I opened the door and stepped outside
And looked far and wide for who could have left such a pup outside?
No one was around to claim the pup I had found.
I went inside and I called the pound,
I called every shelter and security too,
But no one could take this pup in before he would turn blue.
I turned my back to make one last call
When I heard my screen door fall.
The pup jumped in and ran around the room
Then looked up at me with eyes no longer filled with gloom.
I smiled at him and said “You can stay.”
He wagged his tail as if to say “Hooray!”
He laid down at my feet and fell asleep
And as I held him I vowed that this pup I would forever keep.
That pup is my Benny
No longer scared and cold and skinny.
He jumps and runs and plays
As if this is how life has been always.
My apartment is covered with ropes and balls
By this dog that had once been seemed so small.
My cupboards are full of treats and a beef bone
And finally it feels like a home.
Thank you Benny, you crazy pup,
For making this world look up.
But most of all thank you for breaking my door
And making my life boring no more.
