Oh, Boxer friends - we're starting this all over again!!

I don't know if anyone remembers all of my posts about our first boxer, Clark? Well, to do a brief recap - we bought him from a petstore, he ended up having kidney failure, he had to be euthanized shortly after only a year of life for him.

WELL . . . Wagner is still having a hardtime with the housebreaking. So I called my trainer to see what it was we were doing wrong in our training. I described the situation and she said we needed to have him checked by a vet (same thing she told us for Clark). I called the vet to go over the same thing with him and he agreed that he should be checked. Both agreed that he should be housebroken by now and that what I was described to them didn't seem like a training issue, but a vet issue.

I even asked the vet if it was something in our house, but he told us that since we weren't getting sick and that our cats weren't getting sick - as well as the fact that we don't leave him alone to his own devices that it probably wasn't something in our house.

How could this be?? Two dogs from two different places having the same life-path. This is exactly how it started for Clark and now Wagner is travelling down the same path. We can't even look at Wagner without getting sad, knowing what we went through with Clark.

I need to feel better. I'm trying so hard to be positive, but it's hard when I know what the first outcome was with my dear little Clark.

Amy Lyn - don't jump to conclusions! What issues is Wagner having? Zelda is the same age (well, 6 days younger) than your Wagner and I can't rely on her 100% of the time not to have an accident. Tess was 8 months before she was reliable on her own in the house. I have read that you can't expect a pup to be reliable until at least 6 months of age.

What, if anything, am I missing about Wagner? Does he drink excessively? Have you thought about his blood sugar being "off" instead of kidney disease? That could cause excessive urination for sure as could simply drinking more water than is necessary for his hydration.

Let us know what you find out and DON'T loose hope....sometimes Boxer babies are just STUBBORN!

Is this a problem all the time (peeing in the house) or just off and on? Ruby is 2 1/2 years old and she peed in the house just the other day! She'e very good about holding it but she has her occassional accidents.

About the water, we were always told to limit their water intake when in the house. If Ruby drinks alot of water she stays outside for at least a half an hour. Boxers have funny digestive systems and, I would suspect, this would also include urinary tracts..???

Like Chris has said, don't jump to conclusions! Good luck! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. He'll be fine.

I dont know if this will help or not, but Lacie stays outside until she goes pee 2 times. She gets so excited that when she first goes, she does not finish and if I give her a little more time she will go AGAIN. Please keep us updated, Im sending my prayers your way.

Thank you for your positive thoughts.

Here's a brief synopsis of what I'm looking at here and why I called my trainer:

1. Wagner goes out frequently. We usually can't sit for more than an hour without him having to go out. Sometimes it's much more frequently than that, like going out two to three times in an hour.

2. We do limit his water at home to a little bit at a time (as he has a throwing up issue that seems to be totally separate), yet he still has to go out frequently.

3. His last stretch he went for two and a half weeks without an accident and then he had one accident one day, three the next day and so on and so forth.

4. When he has his accidents, he goes to the door, but can't hold it for me to get there and open the door. The other day I was cleaning up one accident by the door, when he rang the bell to go out again! Sometimes though, to his credit, he can hold it. Other times, no matter if you are right there or not, he just can't wait for you to open the door.

These things were the reason that I called the trainer. I was calling her because I figured we were doing something wrong with our training and that she could get us on the right track. When she suggested that we get him checked as well as the vet, that's when we started getting worried.

We didn't expect Wagner to be reliable at this point, we don't leave him alone. When we can't be with him, he goes in his crate. All we expected was that as he got older, he would go less frequently and he would at least be able to hold his bladder until we could get to the door and open it.

Do you still think we're overreacting? I hope we are. I would rather go through the tests and find out nothing was wrong and that we were overreacting, rather than have something be wrong. I want so badly for him to be healthy.

Thanks for your responses, they do make me feel better.

I wonder if it could be something as simple as a UTI (bladder infection) Try to keep a postive attitude and hopefully it will turn out to be someting minor! Please let us know what the Vet says. Good luck!!

I was kind of thinking the same thing s Z's mom. It could even be a bladder problem - I know people that some times can hold it like any other person then other days - can't hold it at all - when they have to go - they have to go now - get out of the way. Weak bladder muscles - this - while not life threatening - is a major inconvenience for humans, so, I imagine it could be the same for a dog. (??) I feel for you - Maybe you could go ahead and put some paper by the door since you know there may be an accident there - to protect your floor - but that might reinforce the behavior. I have found that with Jolie - there is this one place on Clay's side of the bed that - if she thinks she has to poop inside - that's where she willgo - usually only when it's raining and she doesn't want to go outside or Clay was in a hurry and didn't give her time to do "good" business (Ha-Ha). Serves him right huh!! Just kidding. So, whent it is raining I keep some paper over there just in case. I also try to remember to keep those doors closed so she can't even go in there but, sometimes we forget. And, when I let her play in the morning while I take a shower - to go to work - I keep her locked in the bathroom with me so she want pee anywhere else in the house and I have some paper down just in case. I have already taken her out first thing but sometimes she just has to pee ONE more time. The newspaper doesn't seem to keep her from going to the door otherwise - but it might not be the same for your dog. Well - good luck! Hope it turns out ok.

Could it be something in the food? You know how caffiene can cause fequent urination - and some foods for cats cause UTI's - maybe this particular food affects her bladder. Jus wondering...

Please don't worry too much. Wagner is only just 6 months old! Have your vet check him thoroughly and then go from there. I know it's hard not to jump to conclusions and you are right in having him checked right away, however it is highly unlikely that Wagner and Clark would have the same disease. Let us know as soon as you get the test results. We'll keep you in our prayers.

Please try to not worry toomuch ntil he's been seen by the vet. He could have a little infection brewing, or it could simply be he still has an immature bladder. My Poppy is only a few weeks older than Wagner, and is usually very good about not going in the house. But she is not 100% yet. Like Wagner, we can go weeks without an accidentthen she may have two in one day. Sometimes puppies are so involved in life they sort of forget they need to go until it is too late. :)

By all means, talk to your vet but in the meantime try not to worry.
