Hi all. We're fairly new to BW and to Boxers. We have a 12 week old fawn boxer, Sarge. He weighs 14 pounds according to his vet visit yesterday. DH took Sarge to the kids' soccer game yesterday and another boxer owner came up and asked how old puppy was. She was shocked at his small size. She said she has a 4 month old boxer that is about 3 times the size of Sarge. DH asked me to post the question to you guys here - what's a "normal" size for a 12 week old male boxer? The vet didn't mention anything about him being on the small side. He certainly eats well, and the vet said the food we're giving him is a good food (ProPlan Puppy for large breed dogs). He gets plenty of exercise, etc. I don't mind if he's petite - but I don't want something to be wrong with him either. Any feedback on this? Sorry if this is a silly question, but we're new to boxers and don't really know what size we should be expecting.

Thanks in advance!

There is no "right" size for a 12 week old. You'll find on this forum that all boxers grow at different rates and, just because one is bigger than another at a particular age, doesn't mean that that'll stay the same when they mature. You've got a good 3 years until you see the final product......sometimes 4! Feed, exercise, and make those regular trips to the vet and your pup should be fine! Welcome to the world of owning a boxer!

The best advise I can give you is to look and research the forums on this site. I would be more concerned at what you are feeding him. ProPlan is crappy food. With out even looking, it is probably loaded with corn of some sort and a whole host of other bad ingrediants. I would definatly go to the feeding forum, from there go to dogfoodanalysis.com and reseach different dog foods. I just became a better informed dog owner myself in the last couple of months due to joining this community. I had Molly on a dog food that was not very good for her and when the recall on dog food happened this past spring is when I really became informed. She is on Canidae and Timberwolf. Boxers really need a quality diet. Please look at the feeding forum and you will find great info. And remember there is no dumb question when it comes to these dogs. There are many smart people on this site and are a great source of information-so ask away! Good luck in your research and keep us posted.

I have a 6 month old male, when he was 11 wks he weighed 15 lbs. He now weighs 35 lbs. So I think his weight is pretty normal. However, as far as the food goes, there is far better quality out there. I might consider comparing a few other brands.

That is an under statement.

Look the timberwolf web site (q&A )on how dog food is made and also look for threads on BW about dog foods and feeding.
