Our kids are crate trained, and love their crates, but I've never actually used them for housetraining. Have found them very useful for 'alone' training - except for Bella who had confinement issues.

The main reason we crate train is because if they ever go to the vet they will be crated and we want them happy with this - very helpful! We also crate so if we ever have to 'keep them quiet' they can be crated and happy and comfortable about it. This helped save Amy's life after a snake bite. We also use crates and shows and trials and when we travel.

So, we use crates, but crating is not a lifestyle for our dogs. The house crates have the doors open all the time (unless someone is 'keeping quiet') and the dogs can go in and out as they please. I also use the crates for training - mainly building drive and stays - we play race into your crate and race out of your crate games that are fun.
