Hi, I have a 13 week old boxer and I am having ALOT of trouble getting her ears posted to where they stay on for more then ONE DAY!!! I am trying to enter her in the puppy match coming up on NOV 16th however I am scared I may not be able to because her ears won't be standing good enough to remove the tape!! Is there ANYONE near the Columbus area,(don't mind driving 30 min or so)that has experience in taping boxer ears and have had good luck with it? I have even tried putting socks on her feet however that only works for maybe 2 days and she is not around any dogs for them to tear them off,the little bugger is doing it all alone! I took her to a boxer handler just yesterday who has experience in this however by the morning the stuff was totally off her ears AGAIN!!! ANYONE ANYONE SOMEONE please help!!
Please someone let me know!!
Thanks
Lynn

After spending WAY more than we needed to at the vet's office on re-taping/coning both of our dogs' ears, I took our second dog back for what was his last visit there and just watched VERY CAREFULLY how the vet taped/coned his ears. He would invariably pull the tape off or pop a cone out of his ear sometimes during the day, but I was able to replicate the taping/coning at home.

So my advice to you is to buy some athletic tape and sit down with your baby every time she pulls the tape off.

HTH!

Have you talked to your breeder?

It is really hard to give info without pictures, but I'll try. ;) Many puppies will not tolerate "posts" in the ears and I don't use them. When taping my pups ears, I use tightly rolled papertowels (thickness of your middle finger for small and larger for older pup?). I reverse the tape on the papertowel, so the the sticky side is on the outside. I then place the roll in the ear, starting at the base of the ear just above a little knob of tissue (even with the top of head and on the inside of the ear). I then tape the entire ear using two or three pieces of tape. Do not tape too tightly, but you want it snug. I like to lay the tape on the ear and not pull it around.

After both ears are taped, I use a piece of folded cardboard (for strength) at the base of the head, between the ears and tape it around the ears. With this method, I have very little problem and the pups don't really mind at all.

If your pup is having a problem with the actual tape, there may be a sensitivity and you will have to try another brand for sensitive skin. I have never had a problem using "athletic" tape. I do not use adhesive, as it it too hard to get off and can cause sores.

As for the fun match, you can probably show with the tape on, but if not, it won't hurt to have the ears down for a few hours.

Hope this makes sense???

Yes, but her being in texas and me being in Ohio she can't help much! LOL..Anyway,I have tried several different posts with this pup including tampons, foam insulation, backer rod,and toliet paper rolls..The tape is not what is bothering her you are right it is the actually things in her ears..I made a thing today that included paper towels with a straw in the middle and I am going to try it in the morning when her ears fall again..They have been standing since 5 pm today and are doing well so I was told to wait until they flop before I repost them?..I have been taping this pup atleast once a day if not 2 times a day since she manages to pop the posts out of her ears..Yes, I am using cloth athletic tape and have no problem getting it off and she is VERY coroperative(Thanks Goodness) She is alittle princess and sits still thru the whole thing! :) Lucky me! lol
About the puppy match it strickly says no tape or anything on the ears allowed :( so yes, the way they are looking now the match isn't for another 3 weeks so I am sure they will do fine by themselves until it is over..(Knock on wood!)
This pup is very strange basically I can tape her ears for say 3-4 hrs and she gets the post out so I remove them and then the ears stand(no tipping or anything,Straight up) for a good 12-14 hrs without bending and then only then they just bend in half..The bases of both ears are very strong and have been up since like the first week of cropping.

I was taught how to tape her ears properly but somehow she ALWAYS manages to just pop the posts from the bases even after sticking it back in and retaping over what I have done..so I guess patience is key here and just try and pray that everything is OK..lol..wish us luck!
Thanks again..Will let you know how the Paper towel method works for us tomorrow!
