Although probably not a pleasant experience (depending ofcourse on how well your son plays the harmonica..he h ehe), the playing does not "hurt" their ears. The howling stems back to older times when they communicated using yelps, howls, and yipping. Wolves still do this today. Don't you just love the way they pucker their lips when they do it? Ha!

My husband used to play the harmonica and both our Lab and Boxer sang along. They had favorite songs. Sometimes we had duets, sometimes solos. I also have a player piano. They had never bothered to sing with the piano until the harmonica playing got them started, then as long as either harmonica or piano were going they'd join in.

The dogs I have now aren't interested. But it was really fun when Crystal and Sugar, both now at the Rainbow Bridge, sang along.

Indy doesn't howl at the harmonica and that really disappoints me! I always thought it was so cute to hear them. I haven't tried it on Beauty yet - I may try and find it this weekend!!

My mutt Sammie has always howled when an ambulance went past with the siren going, which is at least once a day. I have also wondered if it hurt her ears. None of the other dogs did this howling, but the other day Keisha joined in and they were both howling away.
My sister has a Jack Russell who loves to "sing" when my sister plays the piano. I laughed so hard the first time I saw her do this - then she sang even louder! LOL

I posted about this on the old board too. When I play my violin (which is very badly) Wagner howls and howls.
