Hi! My puppy is 16 weeks today, and started doing something odd early this morning. First, I should state that he is on antibiotic ointment for conjunctivitis. I woke up thinking he was about to vomit, but he wasn't. It was kind of a raspy noise....like when we are trying to clear our throat. It didn't really sound quite like a cough, though. It didn't seem to disturb him....he kept on sleeping. He is up to date on shots, and just had his bordetella last Friday. We got our first snow yesterday and we did go out and play and gor for a 20 minute walk. He loved the snow and ate A LOT of it. Any ideas on what this could be? I don't want to rush him into the vet if it's just a reaction to the cold, but I don't want to ignore it either. He is the first dog I've had since childhood. Thanks very much! Elaine

Was he asleep when he was doing this? It sounds like a noise my dogs make when they are dreaming. They will make the strangest noises you've ever heard when they dream. If he was asleep and hasn't done it since he has been awake I would guess that is what was going on. If he was awake, that's another story. I would just watch him and see if he continues to do it today. If he does, I would call my vet. :)

Weird noises

Hi and thanks for taking the time to answer! Yes, he was asleep, but I've never heard that noise before, but I suppose it's possible....it was freaky. He's been up for several hours now and hasn't done it anymore. He's been playing and ate his breakfast. I'll just keep an eye on him. I keep getting these deja vu's from when my kids were babies :)!

I know what you mean. The first time I heard Roxy make that noise when she was sleeping I thought something was wrong with her too. I'd be willing to bet your pup was dreaming. Wait until your pup does this strange little bark when he is sleeping. It is hysterical. You have to wonder what in the world they could be dreaming! :)

Sounds like boxer dreams to me too! Bonny has them all the time! I love the little barks too. Oh and the sleep running and lets not forget the sleep drinking with the tongue hanging out!
They are too cute!

I think it was just dreaming....

Hi all! You know, I feel so silly, but I think you guys are right and the noises were a dream. He's never done that before! He's been fine all day, so I guess I was over reacting. So easy to do now that I've fallen completely in love with him :)! Question about the cold....do you guys do anything special to them before playing in the snow? He has a sweater....something I thought I'd never do, but he gets so cold! I'm looking for a warm, comfy, easy on/off coat, too. Does anyone do the little boots, or is that just over the top!? My husband would probably be mortified......emgrove

That is too funny about the husband and boots. My husband always tells me I'm going to make Buster a wimp (okay, I baby him). Roxy doesn't mind the snow but doesn't like to be out in it long. I bought her a sweater when she was younger, and she tore it apart so I gave up on that idea. Buster, I'm finding out, doesn't tolerate cold well so I don't know how much he'll be playing in the snow. It snowed about a week ago and he played for about 5 minutes and was done.

Watching Rolen dream is quite funny! He isn't much of a barker, but man does he bark that little funny bark in his dreams all of the time! Silly dog!

Google Fido Fleece-they are the best and easy on and off-they also come in "macho" colors for your hubby  And yes, my boy needs to wear his boots if it is very cold and icy. Walks like a duck in them but at least he will walk :)

Coats are cute and necessary in some areas. You may also try Old Navy, they have various types of coats from light to quite warm and toasty. I have no need for booties here, but I have friends in colder areas and they say how much they help their doggies. As for hubby being mortified, oh well would he want to be outside freezing with no shoes, well then again he is a man afterall, lol.
