Boxer Insane
We need those famous Boxer World healing vibes. My most recent foster baby (I named her Whiskey but her new family is calling her Maggie) is barely hanging on and needs a major miracle to pull through.
Were not sure what happened. She had been with me for more than a month. About 10 days ago she went to her new forever home. On Weds her family took her to have her 3rd set of puppy vaccinations. Shortly after arriving back home she started to whimper and limp. Her new mom took her back to the vet. While she was there she started aspirating blood. At that time she was rushed to a specialist near by who happens to be one of the few vets who could handle this type of emergency.
Unfortunately Whiskey was not doing well and had been placed on a ventilator. Her Mom was told that once she was placed on the ventilator she would only have a 10% chance of pulling through.
Last night Whiskey took a turn for the worse. Her heart started having arrhythmias which they were able to stabilize but they had to turn up the ventilator which was not good.
However the hospital called late last night to say that despite the fact that they had a rocky day and she had started to slip, the high pressure air technique he used to get more alveoli in her lungs to respond was actually working, and despite how bad things looked at 7:30PM, at 10:30 PM she was actually breathing better than she had been all day.
So her breathing got better but her overall condition is a little bit worse, as her kidneys are starting to signs of issues, and her BP was dropping ever so slowly. But because her lungs started to respond, the doc was able to back off the high risk settings and deep sedation so the side effects of such would less threatening.
This morning the plan is to evaluate whether she's ready or not to start the first effort to weaning off the ventilator, which is a very slow and tricky process that takes 5-8 hours of intense concentration on her every second. The sooner he can get her off of it, the less likely she will have other organ failure problems.
Her Mom says she's on an elevated small table in a configuration with ventilator, pulse/EKG and O2/CO2 gas telemetry, catheters, multiple I/Vs. BP cuff, etc. etc. I can’t even imagine my sweet baby lying there with all those tube and machines.
There's still hope, and even though things could swing the other way at any moment, we're hoping for that 10% chance... According to her mom the “Doc says we're no where close to done yet. Thank God it turns out he's an expert on this type of problem and he's done this thousands of times according to UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. If anyone can get our baby out of this, it is him”.
While I was writing this I got another update… this is what her Mom wrote…
“Things change from moment to moment. I just got off the phone with the DR. Her current situation is that early this morning, her lung condition started to deteriorate again, and he had to make adjustments immediately. She is slowly making her way back to where she was last night at 10:30, but in the meantime her kidney function is deteriorating. Her blood pressure appears to have stabilized. He is trying some drugs to help her kidney function but she is not ready to try weaning off the ventilator.”
So please pray for Baby Whiskey/ Maggie. She is such a good puppy. She made us laugh everyday she was here and she deserves a chance to grow into those ears. She played hard with the big kids and did her best to keep up with them when they were burning around the yard. She is very special and she needs all the vibes she can get.
