I just read Darcy's story about Gabbie and the little girl who was afraid of dogs, and had to tell what happened to us this weekend.

We just got back from camping. We were at our friends' campsite and had our dogs tied to the picnic table. Bailey could just reach the edge of the road.

A mother and young children walked by. The little girl was maybe 3 (darling curly blonde, blue-eyed

) Bailey walked out to the end of her lead and stood there wiggling. The mother said, "don't go near that dog, it'll bite you!"

We were sitting at a different table a little ways away. I said, "no, she won't bite, but will probably lick you." They didn't hear me.

Bailey started walking in the direction the girl was going. The little girl turned around and yelled, "GET AWAY FROM ME! STOP CHASING ME!!"

I just sat there dumbfounded.

I know we've discussed this before. I have the feeling that if someone thinks my dogs are scary looking, then don't come near them. I'll tell you they're not mean, but I'm not going to push the issue. What I think is terribly sad about this encounter is that little girl is being taught a fear of dogs.

I think children should be taught RESPECT for dogs. My children know that dogs MAY bite, and some dogs just don't like children. They approach a strange dog slowly and ASK the owner if they may pet the dog. (In fact, I'm very proud of the way my children act around new dogs.

It's sad that some children are taught that ALL dogs bite and you should stay away from them.

Oh, I had to add that our friends gave me such a bad time for being offended by this. The rest of the weekend, I heard, "Linda is so sensitive about her dogs!"

Linda....heck yes you're sensitive about your dogs! Obviously your friend doesn't understand about boxers and people who love them. I say good for you. It's sad that people scare their children. I have a healthy respect for any dog I meet. But I have never been afraid of any boxer I have ever met. It's quite amazing really because it is only with this breed that I feel this way.

Linda, I agree its a shame that this lady is teaching her child to be scared of animals. I have tried to teach both of my girls to always ask permision before petting someones dog and that ALL animals MUST be treated with respect. cindy

It's probably the mother who was afraid of dogs. It's a shame she will be teaching her kids to be afraid also.

Linda, of course everyone is sensative about their dogs, why not? I also think it's a shame that people are not more aware that Boxers are a friendly breed. The trouble is, they always associate them with Staffordshires, (Pit Bulls). When I see a person with a Boxer I never hesitate to stop the car(if it is Safe), or if I am at a mall or on a walk, I stop and have a chat with the person, always about Boxers, of course! How can Boxers do the Kidney Bean and nip at the same time? It is impossible!
