Hi all. Just had to share with you..............
Last night in obedience class we were working on a bunch of things. on leash...off leash...down stay...sit stay......recalls, etc. i worked with Moby off leash for a good part of the class. then i put him on lead when the trainer was rolling the jumps into the ring. well....Moby loves the jumps but he contained himself while they were rolling into the ring. then.......i dropped his leash by mistake and it was like he knew. he picked his leash up in his mouth and proceeded to do high speed laps around the ring.....driving everyone else's dogs crazy. they were all barking at him jumping up and down and causing a major scene. all the while Moby was just running around like a nut. neither I nor our trainer could get a hold of him. he's deaf and since he wasn't looking at me i couldn't give him the sign for anything. no sit..no come..no wait...nothing. I was standing in the middle of the ring totally helpless. all the while hoping that he would jump on another dog to play and get that dog upset with him. i would cringe everytime he got close to another dog because i didn't know if Moby was going to jump on it in play and receive a not so friendly response. finally he looked at me long enough for me to get his attention with a toy and he came to get the toy. UGH.
does anyone have any suggestions for times like this????? i was at total loss and so was our trainer. being that Moby is deaf......verbal commands aren't an option. but at the same time for his safety and the safety of the other dogs in class...........he can't do this!!! i was so totally embarressed since i usually have very good control over Moby. all this after an 20 year-AKC judge that attends our training center with his dog just got finished telling me how beautifully Moby is doing with learning everything. he said he is so totally impressed with my hand signals and Moby's attention. :) WONDER WHAT HE THOUGHT OF MOBY'S HIGH SPEED LAPS AROUND THE RING. :)

No suggestions but I can't help but think that it is just a boxer thing! Bella is terrific whenever we go to class but sometimes she will just throw a tantrum. We have maintenance classes once a month and last time she just decided that she had had enough. Everytime I put her in a down, she would roll on her back and start playing with the leash! My trainer speaks of her in all of her classes, explaining that sometimes your dog will just check out and its a signal that it's time to take a break! Maybe Moby just needed a play break?! Besides, I'm sure that in 20 years the trainer has seen worse things than a boxer burn

Completely Boxer Crazy
Unfortunatley no suggestions on how to get his attention when he is doing mad boxer burns around the ring...though I would have enjoyed watching it myself. I also think it's a boxer thing...or maybe a teenage boxer thing  Winston has been full of himself the past week. I took a tug rope with us to agility class last night to play in between courses because last week Winston definitely need play breaks...this week I was prepared ;)

IMO, I bet the judge of 20 years experience probably got a good chuckle out of it. Who can't appreciate a happy puppy?

Sorry I wish I had suggestions to offer you too but I don't. I also think it's a boxer thing because my girl at 3 did the boxer burn thing twice in agility class. The last time she did this it was our turn and we were out jumping a course. In the middle of the course she took off, grabbed another dog's squeaky toy laying on the ground  and proceeded to do boxer burns and jumps around the field. She wouldn't come back to me when I called until she was good and ready and she's not deaf - just a little "evil" and willful at times. So you can imagine how embarrassed I was but at the same time it was pretty funny. She's definitely the clown of our class! Boxers are so comical and don't like repetition. Maybe they do this because they're bored.

About the only thing I can think of that might help is that I have heard of vibrating collars you can get for deaf dogs. They will vibrate just like a cell phone does and you can operate them with a remote. You could train him to look at you when he feels the vibration.

I would walk off that excess energy before taking him to his class. Boxers have so much energy. From my experience, if I walk him or her before training, s/he is much more focused.

It's okay...it's this exuberance that makes the boxer so loveable!!! :)

good idea

that's a good idea to walk him.
usually.......we shoot home from work.....change our clothes....pack the training bags.......put the dogs in the car....and go. it's pretty rushed. I do try to let the two boy run a bit in the yard while i'm getting ready but it's not a "structured" walk.
i like the idea. gonna try it tonight.
