Moderator: didn't know if i should post this in the Boxer Ring or here in Obedience/Training; please move the post if i posted it in the wrong place

the other night at training we were working on recalls over a jump.(keep in mind that Moby is deaf & works soley on hand signals!)
when it was our turn.....i set Moby up then I walked to the other side of the ring. i turned around and gave Moby the "come" signal. (swung my arm to my chest)
well........he just sat there.
i jumped up and down...gave him the "come" signal again. NO REPSONSE. now HE KNOWS the "come" signal and usually flies over to me when given the signal. i was totally confused.
i gave the signal again....this time with both arms at the same time.
hesitantly Moby decided he should come so he slowly made his way to the jump.....jumped it......hit it with his paw.....and came to sit in front of me (totally off to the side).
so our trainer is very concerned about this because Moby LOVES LOVES LOVES the jumps. she's asking me the whole time WHAT HAPPENED TO MOBY? HE LOVES TO JUMP!!!! WHY ALL OF A SUDDEN IS HE NOT WANTING TO JUMP? WHAT DID YOU DO TO HIM THAT HE DOESN'T WANT TO JUMP?
i told her i had no idea what was going on. she's right.....he LOVES the jumps.
the trainer tells me to try again......
so i set him up again.......go to the other side of the ring........give him the "come" signal. again........NO RESPONSE. he sat there like a rock. then i gave him the signal again....this time he turned to the trainer......looked at her like "WHAT DOES SHE WANT ME TO DO?"
then he turned to the audience (the entire next class was waiting outside the ring for their class to start right after us)......he looked at them as if to say 'CAN SOMEONE HELP ME OUT? I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT IT IS SHE WANTS ME TO DO"
the whole place was silent in anticipation on what was going to happen next.
so the trainer.....once again........is asking me what happened? why won't he jump?
THEN IT DAWNED ON ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i was giving him the wrong signal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so.......I put my arm out to the side (the signal for "JUMP")
well.........MOBY ROCKETED OVER THE JUMP.......SAT FRONT....... AND FINISHED BEAUTIFULLY.
the whole training center went wild! fiestaicon
it sounded like a rock concert.....people cheering and clapping all over the place!!!!!!......and all the while everyone was saying POOR MOBY!!!!! YOU BETTER FEED HIM A STEAK TONIGHT!!!! THAT JUST ISN'T FAIR THAT YOU WERE GIVING HIM THE WRONG SIGN!!!
so I set him up again.........gave him the "jump" signal and again he rocketed over the jump.....sat front...finished beautifullly!!!!!!
i will never live this down at training! our trainer kept saying IT'S NEVER THE DOG!!! IT'S ALWAYS THE HANDLERS FAULT. she told me whenever Moby doesn't do something right from now until a year from now....I'm not allowed to get disappointed because he was sitting politely waiting for the right "signal" and i was the one who messed it all up.
YES........Moby may be deaf........but he certainly is FAR FAR FAR from stupid.
he's so smart!!!!!!!! he knew i wanted him to "come" to me......but in his mind there was this big white wall in front of him and without a jump command......he wasn't risking it.
what a smart boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
just had to share this little story with you!
