What are your views on microchipping? I am planning to get this done in a couple of weeks to both dogs. I called my vet and she does it for $35 each. Found a Boxer site that talks about it: http://www.erinet.com/ghost/microchipping.htm
Can't really find anything negative. Any thoughts/first-hand experiences?

Thanks!

Emma will be microchipped Saturday. I don't see any draw back, only good things from this. I did research the different kinds and she will get the AVID microchip rather than the HOME AGAIN. They both cost $35 also and work the same way except for two differences. 1) The AVID chip is activated when it is put in and tested to make sure it works BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE VET'S OFFICE. The HOME AGAIN is activated when you register with the HOME AGAIN company. 2) The AVID chip can be read by AVID scanners AND HOME AGAIN scanners. The HOME AGAIN chip CAN ONLY BE READ BY HOME AGAIN SCANNERS!!! For these two reasons, I found a vet that uses the AVID microchip. I had to call around to about a half dozen vets before I found one that uses the AVID chip, but to me it was worth the time and effort. Hope this info helps. This is only my opinion and not meant to bother/offend anyone who prefers the HOME AGAIN microchip.

All 3 of mine are microchipped. It's quick and painless, they acted like nothing happened to them. I figure in the long run, it's cheap insurance. Plus, if you use OFA or CERF, you can use it as permanent ID for that.

Wow $35 is good, my vet quoted me $70, maybe I should look elsewhere.

Someone on the Board had their dog tattooed during a surgery, I think that was how they ID in their state (I don't remember who or where) but just another option.
I think either or is a good idea, collars can be taken off or lost.

Both of ours are chipped. I'd check around and watch for specials. We had both of ours done by the vet as a 2 for 1 special. They happen to be AVID chips as well. So far we have not had to use them but it's nice to know they have them. The great thing is, if your dog is stolen, someone can remove a collar, even remove an ear with a tatoo, but most people don't know that they have a chip. If you find your dog, it's proof positive that it is really your dog. Something that otherwise can be very hard to PROVE in a court.

I posted this topic on the other board.
After reading all the good things about microchipping I had Striker chipped with AVID. It cost $38 plus $15 registration through AVID. It is great to have. All the shelters will have free scanners to scan for the chip, and you could also prove it is your dog with the chip.
It took about 5 minutes, painless.

Their appointment is not til the 8th. I'll let you know how it went, but from what you are all saying, it won't be any big deal!

I think you'll be very happy with your decision. I just got my 4 month old pit bull puppy microchipped with Avid three days ago. It is wonderful to know now, that he can be identified no matter what. Just a small story....
When I worked at the last vet clinic, a lady called me to report that she had found a dog that had one of our Rabies tags. I found who the owner was from the tag number, but the only problem was, that the lady who found the dog was holding the collar and tags but not the dog. She had grabbed the dog by the collar to keep it with her in case she did find the owners and the dog got scared and backed off. And that is when the dog slipped right out of the collar. At that point, the dog no longer had anything proving identity, no collar, no tags, and no microchip. Anyway,....good luck, and I'm very confident that you will feel much better.

P.s. And, oh yeah, I live on a military base, and I work at the vet clinic here on base, so I only paid $15.00 for mine. Had to rub that in...hehe

My Amy girl is also microchipped. I also did it for the reason, that she very easily slips out of her collar. But I have yet to remember to have it tested with the next vet visit, I want to make sure it works.
Best regards
