My friend just lost her beloved lab of 13 years. She's thinking about another dog since she's always had a canine companion. She was thinking of a medium sized dog since her lab was about 70 lbs and she's an older woman and had trouble lifting her the last days of her life. She was thinking about something a little smaller, but not too small because she has a 25 lb cat that she's afraid may intimidate the smaller dog. She's always had labs or lab/retrievers so she's still hesitant with getting a breed she's not familiar with, but she can't lift 70 lb dogs anymore.

Any ideas?

If she likes hunting dogs, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever could be a possibility. They are smaller than Labradors. There was one in in an obedience class I took with Oscar. Nice dog.

So many dogs in shelters and rescues are predominantly Lab, and many are a medium size. Maybe you could go with her to help her possibly find a Lab mix at one of your local shelters or through a rescue.

I agree with K8IE, most dogs in shelters are black labs/black lab mixes-I'd start there. Black dogs are usually the last dogs to be adopted, so she should have no trouble finding one that suits her.
